Khoury Youhanna (Faris) Dib | F190 |
Born 1908 - Died 1993 in Lebanon
Raised her brothers and sisters. She was a great cook. She taught her sister-in-laws how to cook.
Married Sheikh Hassib Ghaleb, who was an agricultural engineer by trade, but worked as a teacher of Arabic philosophy and litterature. He was a man of culture, a poet, and a book author. One of his famous books was a textbook required by all high schools in Lebanon, and titled "History of Sciences by the Arabs". Hassib was a founding member of the Tripoli Cultural League, and a non-practicing communist. He died of a heart attack during the civil war of 1996-1997, and left Marie with land properties, as well as royalty income from his books until her death.
Marie told me, a year before she died (i.e. at age 84 ), that she remebered her father Khoury Hanna, sitting her on his lap and singing to her a children's song that went like this :
Khed Khdaydah ya Fellah /
Talle' zibdeh mnill mellah
Wel fellah darab martou /
Aala rghif el Akeltou
Akeltou we ma chabbaaha /
Sabbah batna beyoujaaha
Translation :
O farmer, shake your butter maker /
Make butter from the milk
And the farmer beat his wife (remember this song was from the 1800's)
Because of the loaf of bread that she ate (I guess farmers were very poor !)
She ate it but she was still hungry /
And she started to have a stomach ache
My aunt Marie died in 1993 at the Hotel Dieux Hospital in Beirut. She had lived the last 10 years of her life in hospitals and nursing homes. I saw her the night before her death. At age 85, she was unconcious, but she had a a young woman's clear and wrinkle-free skin . Marie died without children, but she will be remebered by many.
