SRI LANKAN MALAY FAMILY OF ARAB ORIGIN
Raafi
Muhammad has shared with me some family photos of a long settled Malay family
here who he holds are of Arab origin and hailed from Hadramaut
in Yemen according to widely held family tradition. Although in my research and
inquiries in the course of writing Sarandib, I did
not come across any Malay families with Arab roots, it is quite possible that a
few such families exist.
The existence of the Arabic Jawi
or Gundul script and the Shafi
school in the Malay world certainly point to Yemeni
influence and it is very possible that some Arabs from the region settled down
in the Indonesian archipelago and Malayan peninsula and espoused Malay women.
Interestingly, the photographs of family
members here show no trace of epicanthial fold (which
gives the impression of slanted eyes) and the presence of a more developed
hairy system than typical Malays. The nose shape here suggests considerable
Malay admixture which must have modified the Arab aquiline or hooked nose
characteristic of the Semitic races.
Any more information on this is most welcome.
