Haji Ismail’s
family from the second marriage. He had 5 kids from
the first.
The Ismali's were a very prominent and wealthy
Muslim family in Kandy, specially
between 1930’s to 1950’s. They owned many properties
and Businesses in Kandy.
To name a few, cinemas, petrol and service stations, a
hotel, and the crown of
it all, was the Ismail and sons Private Limited, which
traded motor spare
parts, batteries, cycles. This building is yet owned
by the family and located
right opposite the building is the Ismail Clock tower.
A monument built by Haji
Ismail for tragically losing one of his sons in
Kadugannawa. This was built in
1947 and all necessary equipment was imported from the
UK.
The tower was opened by the then Prime Minister, The
Hon D S Senanayake
together with the Mayor of Kandy, in the presence of
the family members. This
tower marks the center of Kandy
and to-date a well-known land mark.
M T Ismail ran the business with his brothers
Saeed and Fasim
Ismail until later 1990’s before retiring. M T
Ismail served as the Chief
Trustee of the Kandy Grand Mosque for over 15 years
and he was also the
President of the Kandy Club, Lions Club and YMMA. He
lived an impressive life
and passed away peacefully in the year 2009.
