WIKRAMANAYAKE - Family #3141
1 Mahawela
Mohottala (Mahawelatenne Mohattala of Kolonne Korale) born 1630 AD. A Minister of Raja Singha II and
appointed Mohottala of Mahawelathenne . Mahawela was a
village south west of the village of Mahawelatenne. Mahawela
in Sabaragamuwa (region) is a town in Sri Lanka.
RAJA SINGHA II 1635-1687 AD – Son
of Dona Catherina and Senarat - (beginning of the period of Dutch occupation of
Ceylon). Youngest son of King Senarat he assumed the title of Emperor and
proceeded to administer the whole of his father’s dominions as Emperor Raja
Singha II, the last great Sinhala Monarch. King Raja Singha II, perceiving the
difficulty that he would have to expel the Portuguese from Lanka, had sent an
emissary to a Dutch settlement in India requesting assistance for the purpose
of driving them from the Island. Eventually the
Kandyan Treaty of 1638 which was a treaty of alliance was
entered into between theKandyan Kingdom Ceylon,
and the Dutch Republic signed by Kandyan King Raja Sinha II for Kandy and Adam
Westerwold and William Jacobsz Coster, a commander and vice commander of the
Dutch Naval Forces, for the Dutch East India Company. The treaty was signed on
23 May, 1638 in Batticaloa. The treaty secured the terms under which the
two nations would cooperate in defending the Kandyan Kingdom from the Portuguese in
the coastal area of the island. The main conditions of the treaty were that the
Dutch should handover the coastal areas they capture to the Kandyan
king and the king should grant
the Dutch a monopoly over export trade on the entire island including the
Cinnamon Industry. Raja Sinha II ordered cinnamon peelers to stay
six miles away from Galle and sent for the Sinhalese chiefs of the area to
explain their conduct in being friendly toward the Dutch.
Mohottala
of Mahawelatenne was
a minister under Raja Singha II who rebelled against the king and migrated
south from the north of Kollone Korale and settled down near Kitulampitiya
Galle, in Dutch territory. One member of
the family settled in Kollone. The Portugese had a fort near Balangoda.
In 1640, the Dutch entering the fray
joining hands with King Raja Sinha II to capture the Galle Fort. The Dutch,
with a force of some 2,500 men under Koster, captured the fort from the
Portuguese in 1640 itself .The Galle
Fort was extensively fortified by the Dutch from 1649 onwards

As a
Senior Solicitor General and Bribery Commissioner, Ian Wikramanayake reached
the apex of his career. He could be emotional, and sometimes undiplomatic,
which strained his relationship with the late Minister of Justice and Public
Administration, Felix Dias Bandaranaike. He would disagree openly on various
issues with the Minister; sometimes he was correct, but he lacked diplomacy in
dealing with his superiors. He felt he deserved to be Attorney-General, when
someone else was appointed. Ian felt he had shown enough dedication, commitment
and loyalty to the Government and the Minister.

Balangoda is one of main cities that belongs
to kadawatha mada korale in Rattnapura district. This area is bounded by the
pettigala mountain range in the west, the steep crest of Detanagala known as
the southern steep in the north and mahawalatenne plateau in the east. Dorawela
oya and Belihuloya meet the Walawe River at Balangoda. The Way ganga originates at Mawela. Mahawelatenne which is the origin of Mahawelatenne family of
mahawelatenne walawwa. they owned this whole
village with 30,000 Acres. There it can see the Mahawelatenne Walawwa, where
Late Madame Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike Ratwatte born and spend her
childhood untill the marriage
Mrs.Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s (1916 – 2000) mother was a
Mahawalatenne ( Rosalind daughter of Rata Mahatmaya S D Mahawalatenne and
Agnes Ellawala) , a direct descendant of the Quisling Mahawalatenne
Mohottala, who was one of Governor Brownrigg’s stooges. In Uva, salt had to be
transported from Palatupana by ox-cart. There was a cattle department for this
purpose called theGon Badda. Brownrigg appointed Mahawalatenne as chief
of the Gon Badda.
The British soldiers needed large supplies of beef.
The Sinhalese refused to sell their cattle for slaughter. Mahawalatenne
undertook to supply animals from Sabaragamuwa.
This Mahawalatenna took a prominent part in a
pro-British agitation in Sabaragamuwa. He colluded with the collector at Galle
to aid an army division to march on Uva where the Sinhalese chiefs were
fighting to get rid of the British. Transport for this division was provided by
Mahawalatenne and a supply depot was set up by him at Batugedera to which
stores could be conveyed by water from Kalutara.
Vast acres of land in Balangoda, confiscated from the
people, were gifted to Mahawalatenne for his many acts of treachery to his
country.
