De Alwis
De Alwis - Family #3137
Sirimalhamy b approx 1610, from Sabaragamuwa
(Ratnapura)who in the
17th century, at the near end of the Portuguese rule, (around 1650), is
reported to have crossed
over from the king's territory (King Rajasinghe 2, ruled from
1635-1687, in the
Kingdom of Kandy), and is said to have travelled along
Kaluganga, with his wife,
two son's and a daughter, and a herd of cattle, and reached the
Portuguese
territory of Kalutara, where he assumed the name Siriwardena. (Supposed to have
resided in Millewa, his
wife's ancestral village)His son was baptized and assumed the
name Don Johan de
Alwis, resided at Bentota, and functioned as Lekam.
(Recorder).He is supposed
to have had 3 sons. And one son, Anthony Sepala de Alwis
Wijesiriwardene, became
Mudliyar of Pasdun Korale and Bentota.
De Alwis is a Sinhala surname. It is a corruption
of the Portuguese
surname Alves which was spread across Ceylon during the time of
Portuguese rule
of the island.
(D'Alwis- This is a
Spanish -Portuguese
locational name, of Roman (Latin)origins. It derives from the
ancient
word"alveus", which literally translates as"the river bed",
and was an introduction by the Roman invaders, of the 3rd
centuary AD.The
modern town of Alva, and the river Alva (in Portugal), are the
sources of the surname.
The name is most commemorated by the 1st Duke of Alva, who
conquered Portugal
in 1580.)
Many
adopted Portuguese names, were
often those of their sponsors at Baptism.
The word
Don or Dona, first conferred
by Portuguese on nobleman and women and high rank Sinhalese. And was later given to any
person, appointed to
office under the government.
By
the 1630's about half of the
people of the coastal regions of the South West and most of the
inhabitants of
Jaffna professed Christianity. Many baptised Roman Catholics may
have continued
to follow Buddhist rituals in their homes, while adopting a
different identity
in public.
During
about three quarters of a
century of Dutch rule a large number of baptisms took place. In
1718, the total
in Colombo, Galle and Matara areas were 93, 165. The vast
majority converted to
ensure their hold over property, the legitimacy of their
children, and rights
of inheritance, under the Company's administration. People of
Ceylon, straddled
two identities with some ease.
Both
Portuguese and Dutch
Governments, made profession of Christianity a pre-requisite for
government
employment, and vigorously sought conversion. However when the
British made it
known, that they did not require conversion, to their form of
Christianity, many
Lankan protestants
changed their
professed religion to Buddhism and Hinduism.
The
Thombu index was started by
the Portuguese, but registration work began in the 1740's.
It is
possible that during the
Portuguese /Dutch period, they have baptized and taken the name
de Alwis. (D' Alwis
)
Internet document
says, in Sri Lanka, members of
the landed aristocracy embraced christianity and took
Portuguese surnames at
baptism, during the Portuguese period which ended in 1658.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the
book Memoirs of Late James D'Alwis edited by AC Seneviratne in
1939
After 1604 those who had left the 7 korale's
for Sabaragamuwa found it
no better condition, they felt a desire to abandon and to seek
refuge in some
quite locality. Long before the Dutch
succeded the Portuguese and long before the Dutch rendered the
inland waters
navigable, various points on the west coast between Bentota and
Negambo, and
boats were placed, on the kelani ganga to maintain communication
by the river, confined
to the Kandyan Kingdom. The new settlers of Sabaragamuwa found a
easy passage
en route by the Kaluganga to those domains in ancient
principality Raiygama (Western
Province)
Though it was undoubtly the close of their
rule in Ceylon, it is
nevertheless not a little surprising that the Portuguese now
attempted to
extend their religion beyond their own frontier, and to carry it
into the
inland districts of the island. Notwithstanding the formidable
opposition which
they met at the hands of the Dutch, who had already commenced to
interpose
obstacles on the way to the Portuguese. And not withstanding the
treaty of 1638
between King Rajasinghe 2 and the Dutch, by which the exertions
of the
Portuguese clergy were greatly limited, yet it is not little
surprising that it
was chiefly at this period they exerted their influence, not
only to effect
convertions among te highest families of the land, but to
introduce at the same
time, a very questionable nomendature to distinguish the
converted.
It was at this point that the new Kandian
settlers in the confines of
Raiygama foresaw that
the most effectual
mode by, which they could secure rank and office was by
embracing the faith, which
had been offered, as a bait for such distinction.
Naturally ambitious, as the sinhalese are,
Siriwardene like many fellow
emigrants who accompanied him hesitated not to effect changein
hi s religion and
the name, and consequently in position. Thus we find a record of
his son
baptised under the name Don D'Alwis and assumed the christian
name Johan. Was
soon created the position Lekam or Recorder.

believed a de Alwis walauwwa existed in Aurburn Side, and may
have been built
around 1739, close to Christ Church. Thereafter several de Alwis

Christoffel Bandaranaike, who died there in 1882, and was
located at No 42
Silversmith Street.)
(P4 SF
says Don Daniel had 2 brothers, it
could be Don Louis, school master, who married Dona Catona b1747
and on Salman
school master of Kalutara.)
(The
writer believes Don Daniel was born in
Galkissa, but had strong connections with Kalutara. First
reference to Christ
church Dehiwela/Galkissa is in 1705.As a result the writer
belives Don
Daniels's father Phillipoe, may have settled close to Christ
church
Dehiwela/Galkissa, around 1739)
Don Daniel
de Alwis Goonetilleke Samarasinghe
received a token of honour for the services rendered
during the
construction of the canal in Nedimala
in lake of Moratuwa in 1771.
According
to Thombu index Daniel de Alwis had land in Dewelmulla,
Pepiliyana, Gangodawila
and St Sebastian Colombo.
(After
Daniel de Alwis’s death on 27/12/ 1794 ,
Don Abraham de Alwis became
Mudaliyar on
7/1/1795, he may be Abraham de Alwis Goonetilleke Siriwardene
Mohandiram who
married Apolonia (b1755) in 1774 and had 12 children, Abraham de
Alwis Goonetilleke
Siriwardene’father is Joan de Alwis, who was a brother of

who married Florentina

Adirian de
Alwis was brought up by his
aunt, Johanna Maria Perera, wife of Leander de Saram
Karunaratne.As such it
could be assumed that Adrian's mother Apolonia may have died
around 1772, after
the birth of 4th child Hendrick. (Paul
Pieris,
used diaries for information to write his book. Adrian de
Alwis's diary
mentions that his home was in Galkissa.SF book page 4, Paul
Pieris vol 3)
(Adrian de Alwis
received Wolvendhal property
from the last will of Maria Johanna Perera wiil date 11/7/1810
wife of Leander
de Saram.) (Maria Johanna Perera's sister is Appolonia
Perera.Adrian's mother
is Apolonia.) (Possibly the Wolvendhal property was in
Silversmith street, maybe
refered as Karunaratne Walauwa.)
According
to thombu index Adrian de
Alwis had land in Hulsdorf.
Siblings
of Adirian are Ana, Helena,
Regina and Hendrick (Adirian
was in
Kalutara in the years 1778 and 1779, and had gone there to read

From the
above information it seems that Daniel de Alwis b1740 and his
son Adirian de
Alwis b1766 lived in Galkissa. There is folk talk, saying that
there was a
walauwa, where the Alwis's lived, existed long ago in Aurburn
side Dehiwela, close
to the Christ Church.

(Gankanda Aaracchi
was attached to Don Manual
Tennakoon, Disawa of Beminiwatte. Manual Tennakoon fled to
Colombo and joined
the Dutch on 12/2/1676 with 300 followers, when his brother was
killed by King
Rajasinghe 2 in 1676.)
He too came to Colombo in
1676 from Seethawaka, and joined the Dutch Governtment, which
gave him the
Muhandiram post of Salpita Korale. (According to Dias Abeysinghe
book)
Gankanda
arachchi joined the Dutch in 1676, and took the name Alexander
de Saram. He was
appointed Mudliyar Salpita Korale. He and his son Anthonan de
Saram was given
planting leases to plant coconut in Wellawatte (16, 000 coconut trees
or 250 acres, according
to SF vol 3, page 90 and Galkissa.15, 000 coconut trees or 234
acres, according
to Dutch internet document). But around year 1730, the
Wellawatte and Galkissa
lands were sold to Anthonan de Saram by the Dutch Governtment.
(Change of land
policy, sold to Mudliyars who planted the land.)
Anthonan de
Saram'son was Gankanda arachcige Simon de Saram. His son was
Louis de Saram, b1770.
And his son was Leonard de Saram b 1814. His wife was Susana
Hetroyda de Alwis.
Leonard de Saram inherited 75 acres at Wellawatte and 20 acres
at Galkissa.

last will of Susanna Hetroyda

Portuguese
Period and after.
Portuguese presence in Sri Lanka lasted from 1505
to 1658. It is believed between the years 1600 to 1658, there
was a Portuguese clerk residing in Galkissa, somewhere opposite
the present day Galkissa Cemetery. Because all the land between
Mihindu Mawatha and Terrance Avenue and including the Galkissa
Walauwwa premises, in the deeds it is mentioned, Liyanaparangiya watte.
Around the year 1676, General Mudiyanse Tennakoon
working for King Rajasinghe 2 of Kandy, deserted Kandy with 300
followers and joined the Dutch Governtment coming through Kelani
Ganga. With him 3 arachchi's also came. Namely Gankanda arachchi
and 2 Denawaka de Livera Arachchi brothers. Gankanda Archchi
took the name Alexander de Saram, and was appointed Mudliyar of
Salpita Korale. It is believed Alexander de Saram built a
walauwwa somewhere in Liyanaparangiyawatte in Galkissa. He and
his son Anthonan de Saram was given the task of planting 16, 000
coconut trees in Wellawatte and 15, 000 coconut trees in
Galkissa, which they did, for which they were paid by the Dutch
Governtment. Around the year 1730, the land maintenance policy
of the Dutch Governtment changed, and they gave the Mudliyars
who planted and developed the land to purchase the land. It is
believed Anthonan de Saram Mudliyar of Salpita Korale, purchased
the Wellawatte lands around 360 acres which was called
Mahawellawatte. (From
present day Savoy to Rajasinghe Road). Also he purchased the
Galkissa lands. (From
present day Mihindu Mawatha to beyond St Thomas's College.)
The 1st Walauwwa in Galkissa may have lasted from
1680 to 1820. And Anthonan de Saram's Grandson Louis de Saram
built the 2hd Galkissa Walauwwa in the year 1820, which has
lasted over 200 years. . Later Louis de Saram's son Leonard de
Saram, b 1814, lived at Gakissa Waauwwa. Also Udaha Walauwa was
built around the year 1800

James De Alwis (1823–1878)
was a lawyer, writer, poet and a
prominent colonial era legislator from Ceylon.
He was an unofficial member of the Legislative Council.
He is remembered for his writings that included several works on
Buddhism.
Educated at the Colombo Academy as one of its
first students, he was part of the Macaulay of Ceylon
along with Frederick Nell
and his brother Louis, Charles Ambrose Lorensz,
John Prins, Charle Ferdinands and Dandris de Silva Gunaratna
inspired by the Young England movement.
Qualified as a Proctor,
he went on to become an Advocate
and served as a District Judge and Police Magistrate. During his legal
practice, his clients included Mudliyar Jeronis de Soysa (father of Sir Charles Henry de Soysa),
Arunasalam Ponnambalam Mudliyar (father
of Sir
Ponnambalam Ramanathan) and
S. Edirimanasingham, Mudaliyar of the Governor's Gate (grand
uncle of Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan)
Later he was appointed as an unofficial member of the Legislative Council of
Ceylon; however he resigned together with George Wall, Charles Ambrose Lorensz,
W. Thompson, John Capper and John Eaton on 15 November 1864 on a
point of principle regarding the fiscal policy of the Government
and its strict disregard to respect the procedures of the
Legislative Council. [1]

Murder by chloroform at Duff House,
Bagatalle Road
By Jayantha Gunasekera
Part 1
Maha Mudaliyar Sir Solomon Dias Bandaranaike of
Horogolla Walauwe had two daughters and a son. The son was SWRD,
Prime Minister of Ceylon, from 1956 to 1959. He married
Sirimavo, one of the daughters of Barnes Ratwatte (later Sir Barnes). She
was a good 18 years SWRD’s junior in age. Though Sir Solomon was
not a man of education, he aspired to high titular office. He
aped the British so much that he named his son Solomon West
Ridgeway after a British Governor.
SWRD was educated at St Thomas’ College, Mt.
Lavinia, a Christian school, and at the University of Oxford,
where he was elected Treasure of the Oxford Union. He was
admitted to the English Bar and, on his return, he practised his
profession for a few years. Thereafter, he took to politics and
was elected as the representative for Veyangoda. Unlike his
father, he was national minded, and donned the “ariyasinhala”
dress, and even became a Buddhist.
One of Sir Solomon’s daughters was given in
marriage to Leo D’Alwis
of Mt. Lavinia. The D’Alwis’ were possessed of vast tracts of
agricultural property, and property in the Western Province.
Leo’s sister, Lillian
Roslin de Alwis, was given in marriage to a
Cambridge-educated, non-practising barrister – Stephen Seneviratne.
The bride was a lady of large proportions, heavily built.
Stephen was the eldest son of Attapattu Mudaliyar Solomon Seneviratne, and his
mother was a sister of the Maha Mudaliyar. So we see that
Stephen and wife were both closely related to Sir Solomon.
Stephen’s country residence was Kandahena Estate,
Veyangoda. Stephen and his wife, soon after they married,
resided at White House, Ward Place, Colombo. 7, which was not
such a residential area, as it is now. He had a short stint at
the Bar, but left and joined the Valuation Dept. as a Govt.
Assessor. Within a few years he left Govt. service and did
freelance Valuation for the Public Trustees Dept. and the State
Mortgage Bank. He did not thereafter show any inclination to
engage in intellectual pursuits and to continue as a member of
the Bar. He was more interested in managing his agricultural
lands. He was particularly interested in animal husbandry and
poultry rearing, hardly the kind of activity expected of a
Cambridge-educated lawyer. Perhaps Stephen knew his limitations.
He knew only too well that qualifying as a lawyer was one thing,
and practising was quite another. His son Terence, perhaps, took
to agriculture, and became the Director of Agriculture at
Peradeniya, due to his father’s influence.
After a difficult confinement, Mrs. Seneviratne
gave birth to their only child, Terrence and the doctor in
attendance was Dr. S. C. Paul, one of the earliest Ceylonese to
qualify as a surgeon. Some years after the birth of the baby,
Mrs. Seneviratne developed an early diabetic condition. At the
time of her marriage, both her parents were dead, being chronic
diabetics. She was given in marriage by her brother Leo D’
Alwis, who was extremely fond of her. Mrs. Seneviratne developed
a morbid frame of mind and made no bones about the fact that she
too would not live long, like her parents.
A few years later, Stephen decided to sell White
House, which he had inherited. Mrs. Seneviratne had constant
breezes with Stephen over this sale. He sold a dowry property at
Wellawatte and with the proceeds he purchased the farm at Nawala
and an estate at Alawwa.
Another matter that they were quarrelling about was a servant
girl called Jessie. Mrs. Seneviratne had suspicions that Stephen
was having an illicit affair with Jessie. This girl was sacked
by Mrs. Seneviratne, but re-employed by Stephen to work in the
Nawala property.
After the sale of White House, they shifted to a
rented house in Arbuthnot Street, until April 1933, when they
shifted to Duff House at Bagatalle Road in October of the same
year. While living at Arbuthnot St, she wrote to Stephen the
following letter, which was produced at the trial. The letter
read; “By creeping into a miserable house for Rs100/- if
anything goes wrong with my child, I will without hesitation
kill myself then and there. I will not be a burden and a
stumbling block to you much longer. Only a few years is all that
is left for me. Every morning, noon and night I will pray to God
to shorten my days. With every charitable act I shall pray for
the same thing. I now live as a prisoner in the cell, waiting
for the end of his term. I will not live for more than 40 or 50
years, because my parents died early. I will await death my
comforter and redeemer. Can you buy me a pistol before I go to
the other house. At least alone I will have some sort of defence
then. ”
Their son Terrence was very attached to his father.
His mother used to beat him up whenever she lost her temper.
Over this too, there were constant quarrels between husband and
wife. She also disapproved of Stephen visiting his
sister-in-law, Mrs. Francis Seneviratne at Veyangoda.
Mrs. Stephen Seneviratne, according to the evidence
led at the trial, was a highly strung neurotic person. She flew
into a rage for trivial matters, and often used to lock herself
up and refuse to eat, for several days. She thought that White
House was haunted and complained of ghosts. Noises of polecats
used to be considered by her as strange noises. Stephen never
took his wife seriously and treated her in a light hearted
manner. They had been leading a cat and dog life for some years
before her death.
At Duff House Mrs. Seneviratne slept with her maid
Alpina. In the next room, Terrence slept with his Nurse Mabel
Joseph. According to Alpina, Mrs. Seneviratne spent a restless
night on the day in question, and woke up twice, once to close
the shutters due to the rains, and again, to drink some water.
Was she tossing in bed contemplating the drastic action she was
hoping to take in the morning?
At 6 a. m., according to Alpina, the lady was
awake. Alpina went to the kitchen. About 15 minutes later, their
15-year-old servant boy Seelas, and driver Perera told Alpina
that the lady wanted her. As she entered her mistress’s room she
noticed an oily smell. Because the lady was lying across the bed
with her head towards the wall and legs hanging over the outer
edge of the bed, her master went to the lady’s bed and fanned
his wife with a book, and sent the maid for some brandy, and hot
water in empty beer bottles which her master applied to the
various parts of her mistress’s body. He also attempted
artificial respiration.
According to Alpina and 21-year-old Mabel Joseph,
the lady was alive on Sunday October 15th at 6. 15 a. m. There
was a bottle of Aspirin tablets in her room. Did the servants
hear a scream, a groan or a gurgling sound?
Then the car was sent to fetch the aunt of Mrs.
Stephen — Mrs. Harry Dias Bandaranaike and the family doctor, Dr
S. C. Paul.
If Stephen was responsible for her death, rather
than suicide, “it would have to be a carefully prepared and a
well timed act, on his part, to come into his wife’s room ready
with the bottle of smelling salts, filled with chloroform,
poured the chloroform on to a handkerchief of his wife and
smothered her by placing the saturated hankie over her mouth and
nostrils, and then gone into his son’s room and being seen by
Alpina, coming out of the room”.
There was ample evidence that Mrs. Seneviratne was
familiar with the use of chloroform, and that she was aware of
the fact that chloroform was available in the house.
Dr. Paul arrived at Duff House along with Mrs.
Harry Dias Bandaranaike on the morning of 15th October. Though
Dr. Paul thought it was a case of suicide by taking an overdose
of Aspirin, he telephoned the Coroner, the Police and Leo
D’Alwis. On learning later that the Police and the Coroner did
not suspect foul play, and did not propose to take any action,
he gave a certificate that death was due to syncope or heart
failure, following an over dose of Aspirin. Leo D’Alwis had
himself noticed the marks on the face but did not seriously
suspect foul play, as his sister had threatened suicide, many
times.
On October 16th, the funeral took place. Leo
D’Alwis’ suspicions grew as there were frequent quarrels between
his sister and Stephen and he was not satisfied about the marks
on her face. On the advice of Dr. Paul, Leo made a complaint on
November 7th. Inquest proceedings began before E. H. R.
Tennison, Police Magistrate. Tennison ordered the exhumation and
the post-morten examination was conducted by Dr. T. S. Nair, the
JMO. Tennison was of the opinion that Mrs. Seneviratne was
murdered. On December 3rd the Additional Magistrate C. B. P.
Perera started Non-Summary Proceedings, continued day to day,
and the accused Stephen Seneviratne was committed to stand his
trial before the Supreme Court.

and Appeal to the Privy Council – Part 2

Murder by chloroform at Duff House
By Jayantha Gunasekera
Part 2
The trial of Stephen Seneviratne began on May 14,
1934, at the Colombo Assizes before the first Malay Judge of the
Supreme Court, Justice M. T. Akbar, and an English speaking
jury. This judge was considered a clever legal personality.
Deputy Solicitor General M. W. H. de Silva with
Crown Counsel H. L. Wendt and Police Superintendent J. R. G.
Bantock and Dr. M. V. P. Pieris appeared for the prosecution.
Dr. Pieris assisted in the examination of the medical witnesses.
Incidentally, DSG Silva subsequently became the Attorney General
and after his retirement was appointed Minister of Justice.
King’s Counsel R. L. Pereira, H. A. P. Sandrasagara
KC and Stanley Obeysekera KC, with Eric Soysa and P. H. P.
Jayatilleke appeared for Stephen Seneviratne.
Pereira and Sangrasagara were the top criminal
lawyers at that time. Amongst the prosecution witnesses were
Alpina the servant woman, Mabel Joseph the nanny, Seelas, Martin
and Banda — the servant boys, K. D. Simon the cook, and driver
Simon Perera.
Thereafter, Mrs. Harry Dias Banadaranaike, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Seneviratne, Mr. and Mrs. Leo D’Alwis, Edmund Dassanaike,
Proctor Felix Jayawardene, Dr. Gunaratnam Cooke and Mrs. Ohlmus
also gave evidence, for the prosecution.
The job of the prosecution was tricky and had to be
handled delicately because Mrs. Stephen Seneviratne had on more
than one occasion threatened to commit suicide. All the defence
had to do was, not to prove that Stephen did not commit the
murder, but only to create a reasonable doubt.
The trial judge Justice Akbar was a deeply
religious man, who could be swayed by religious sentiments,
apart from the evidence. This was a case where much medical (technical) evidence
needed evaluation, and Judge Akbar was quite competent to handle
this aspect. Akbar Hall in the Peradeniya Campus is named after
him.
Many doctors gave evidence. Dr. S. C. Paul’s son
Prof. Milroy Paul was firmly of the view that the external
injuries were consistent with the application of chloroform,
whether self inflicted or applied by an external force. He cut
across his father’s view that death was due to syncope or heart
failure, following an overdose of Aspirin. Father and son
figured prominently in this case, particularly due to their
divergent opinions.
Dr. S. C. Paul produced several brilliant children.
Milroy Paul, professor of surgery, whose son, Crown Counsel
Wakely Paul was a friend of mine. It is said that he got into
the clutches of the LTTE Diaspora, while he was in the US.
Another son, A. T. S. Paul was, I believe, a thoracic surgeon.
Yet another son was Paul Jayarajan, the father of my schoolmate
the late Ana, who lived close to my parental home in Flower Rd,
Colombo 7. Paul Jayarajan entered the prestigious Indian Civil
Service.
A daughter of Dr. S. C. Paul, I think, married
former Solicitor General R. R. Crossette-Thambiah, whose son
Malli Crossette-Thambiaah, was a top lawyer. Another of Dr.
Paul’s daughters married Mr. Rasaretnam, who became Surveyor
General. His daughter Sulochana married my friend Ajit
Saravanamuttu, the youngest of P. Sara’s children. Rasaretnam’s
son Rudy was an eminent surgeon. Malli Crossette and Rudy were
gentlemen to their fingertips. I believe that Dr. S. C. Paul had
many other children, whose names I am not aware of.
Dr. M. V. P. Pieris (who
also assisted the prosecution) was an eminent surgeon who was
ambidextrous. After his retirement, he served as High
Commissioner in London. The other medical men who gave evidence
were Dr. T. S. Nair, who performed the post-mortem examination,
and Dr. J. S. de Silva (senior
anaesthetic at the General Hospital) who categorically stated
that the deceased had committed suicide. Dr. R. L. Spittel, one
of the best known surgeons of his day, was positive that it was
homicide. Dr. Spittel was well known to the Veddha community. He
wrote several books including “Where the wild sambur Roams”. Dr.
Karunaratne MD was a highly experienced pathologist, who had
performed nearly 3000 post-mortem examinations. He was present
at the post-mortem of Mrs. Seneviratne, and his view was that it
was a probable homicide. Therefore this murder trial was more
like a Medical Seminar!
All doctors including Dr. S. C. Paul, were now
agreed that chloroform was the cause of death; but there were
two groups, (a)
those who thought that death was due to Syncope, and (b) others who were of
the view that death was due to asphyxia and syncope, or simply
by smothering.
The evidence was concluded on June 8, and on the
same afternoon the court took the unusual step of visiting Duff
House. Although this visit was perfectly legal, it had to be
conducted under specific conditions. An experiment before the
judge and the foreman of the jury was performed by Dr. Pieris,
in the absence of the other jurors. Inspector Van Cuylenberg was
to lie on a bed and was requested to make noises like groans.
The Privy Council decided that these demonstrations were
irregular and unnecessary for the administration of justice.
Then began the address to the Jury of Deputey
Solicitor General Silva, followed by the brilliant address of
Pereira K C.
Stephen Seneviratne was convicted by a 5 – 2
verdict of the Jury, and sentenced to death.
Pereira was easily the most devastating cross
examiner of his day, and most witnesses, particularly doctors,
dreaded to face him. He had a bull dog like exterior, and many a
doctor had fainted under his cross examination. He lived in an
enormous house at the intersection of Green Path and Flower
Road, Colombo 7, which now houses the Education Dept. He had two
children, Carmen West, and R. G. C. Pereira, the son who
outshone the father, in the father’s life time. RGC was to be
conferred Silk, but for his untimely death in his 50s. Due to
differences of opinion with his father, he chose to live in a
suite in the Galle Face Hotel.
There was no Court of Criminal Appeal then, and
Stephen Seneviratne appealed to the Privy Council in England.
The Appeal came up before Lord Maugham, Lord Roche and Sir
George Rankin. D. B. Sommerville KC (Attorney General of
England), with L. M. D. De Silva KC appeared for the AG of
Ceylon, while Seneviratne was represented by H. I. P. Hallet KC
and R. L. Pereira KC.
On July 29, 1936, their Lordships of the Privy
Council advised His Majesty the King, that the Appeal was
allowed, and the death sentenced quashed. Seneviratne left
prison after spending 30 months, and rejoined his son whom he
was immensely fond of.
Many strictures were passed by the Privy Council on
Justice Akbar’s Charge to the Jury. It is rumoured that Akbar
suffered a nervous breakdown, and retired prematurely
23 April, 2017
Sir Solomon Dias Bandaranaike’s granddaughter and
Leo and Alex De Alwis’ daughter, Rukmani Eheliyagoda, fondly
known as Rukie, saw the dawn of the day nine decades ago.
Her children eagerly awaited the celebration of her
91st birthday with her on 26 March 2017, when she received the
call from her Maker on 19 March to step off the stage of life,
and so she had to bid farewell to all of us as the curtain
finally came down. She faced her death stoically, solemnly and
serenely.
Even though she was born to an aristocratic family
with the proverbial silver spoon in her mouth, she remained a
simple, cheerful, graceful and dignified lady.
Many considered her an adorable angel who showered
kindness and generosity on people and assisted them at every
opportunity she got. She was a God-fearing person with an
unshakable faith, whose zest and charm galvanized the prayer
groups and the Christian circles she was connected with.
She was a prayer warrior who wrote down prayer
requests received from others and prayed earnestly until they
were resolved.
Rukie had an entourage of trustworthy friends from
her old St Bridget’s days. She formed the ‘Action Group’ of old
Bridgetines twenty five years ago and while undertaking charity
work, they met every month to reminisce about their antics in
the Convent boarding and outside. She also served as the Vice
President of the SBC Past Pupils’ Association.
Being an intensely family person, she took great
interest in her five children, four grandchildren and three
great grandchildren with whom she was closely knit.
The Grand Matriarch of the Eheliyagoda family, was
cherished and adored by the family and their spouses.
Royal-Thomian Big Match days were indeed days of
fun when both the Royal and Thomian flags were hoisted at her
home (she being a
past Thomian girl and Percy a past Royalist) creating much
noise, fun and frolic as family members cheered different
schools. Just a few days before her departure, it was her final
chance to wave the Thomian flag in high spirits singing Esto
Perpetua. . . . normally reserved for youthful exuberance.
Her home down Chandraleka Mawatha, Borella, was an
open house right through the year overflowing with warmth and
hospitality. Christmas festive season and New Year celebrations
were the highlights, being lively affairs.
A family tradition at New Year saw a table laden
with seasonal treats with people visiting to wish her. She
welcomed all with a smile that lit up the room. Many were the
times when I sat with her to indulge in the festive favourites.
This year it would be an empty table without her sparkling
presence, reminding us of the idiom, that all good things must
come to an end.
It is befitting to identify her with the virtuous
woman extolled in Proverbs 31: where we could unhesitatingly
echo that . . . . her children rise up and call her blessed. . .
her values of openness and integrity blended with her wit,
charm, sincerity and elegance, have indeed been an inspiration
to many-both young and old-and all who knew her would deeply
miss her as she departed to her heavenly abode, even while in
her final moments, encouraging all to live life to the fullest
and deeply trust God in all endeavours so that all may be well.
Hers was a life fully lived. Until we meet again. .

Wellawatte
and Galkissa lands. A history of 350 years. From 1675 to 2025
Initially
planted with coconut by Alexander de Saram and his son
Anthonan de Saram, on the request by Dutch Governor Rijkloff
van Goens in the period 1676 onwards.
Early records indicate that the village of"
Galkissa", in the year 1510 AD, was named after a rocky mound
"Lihiniyagala". This village was under the Kingdom of Kotte. The
name"Wellawatte" means "Sandy Garden"in Sinhalese.
A)
Dutch ruled
Ceylon during the period Year 1658 to 1796
In the year 1676, Don Manuel Tennakoon
with 300 followers escaped the Kandy king, King Rajasinghe 2 and
joined the Dutch at Malwana, coming through the Kelani ganga.
This included Gankanda arachchi and two Denawaka Rala arachchi's
(brothers) (According to Dias
Abeysinghe book) Gankanda arachchi settled in Salpita Korale,
Colombo District, while the Denawaka rala arachchi's settled in
Ampitigala in the Kalutara District.
Gankanda
arachchi took the name Alexander de Saram and was
appointed Mudliyar Salpita Korale.
B)
Dutch ruled
Ceylon during the period 1658 to 1796, and they were in control
of the coastal areas.
They had the Dutch East India Company,
which did the trading of spices. And may be the management of
the lands, would have been done by the company.
C) It is believed Alexander de Saram,
Mudliyar Salpita Korale was given the task of planting coconut in
Wellawatte and Galkissa on a lease during years 1664 to
1675, When the Dutch Governor was, Governor Rijkloff van Goens.
. For maintenance for every 8000 trees, 200 Rix dollars were
paid for a year. It is belived in Year 1730, the land
maintenance policy changed and the Mudliyars who planted the
land was allowed to purchase the land.
Mahawellawatte
land ( Wellawatte
suburb)
D)
According to Paul Pieris's Sinhalese family Vol 3 page 90, it
says- Maha Welle Watta of 16, 000 coconut trees, was
purchased by Anthonan de
Saram Wirasingha Siriwardena Mudaliyar of Salpita Korale
with Manual de Andradi for
1355 rxd on 20/7/1730. Later he bought the share of Manual de
Andradi and became the sole owner.
A land with 16, 000 coconut trees equals to 400
acres.
E) In
internet in a website It says-The
first village to the South of Colombo was Galkissa (Mt Lavinia). In the
time of Governor
Rijkloff van Goens (1664-1675)the
village was rented for ten years on the condition that 8000
coconut trees would be planted, there over the period and a sum
of 200 rix dollars also be paid yearly.
Governor
Rijkloff van Goens 1664 to 1675
F) In internet in a website called Full text of
Ceylon and the Hollander 1658-1796 in para 82 it says the
following. The Company had various gardens, including a tobacco
plantation in Negombo and a coconut land of 15, 000 trees at
Galkissa which were leased out.
land with 15, 000 coconut trees equals 300 acres.
G)
Gankanda Arachci who took the name Alexander de Saram b1640, seem
to have had 4 children, Anthonan, Louis, Hendrick and Thomas.
Most probably Alexander de Saram Wijesekera made
his "de Saram walauwa "in Galkissa, probably close to Mihindu
Mawatha. Which may have existed from 1680 to 1800
Udaha
Walauwa in
Mihindu Mawatha Galkissa was built in year 1800, maybe by
William de Saram Weerasinghe Siriwardena, b1760
Galkissa

Mihindu Mawatha was built in the year 1820, by Louis de Saram, (Son of Simon de Saram

H1) Anthonan de Saram and Thomas de Saram were
active in planting coconut in Wellawatte. And Anthonan de Saram
planted coconut in
Galkissa.
Anthonan
de Saram,
Mudliyar Salpita Korale, b1675-d1752, (M20/1/1704)+Maria
Johana Dias, and had 8 children. Anthonan de Saram seem to have
bought 360 acres at Wellawatte in 1730 from the Dutch
Governtment.

properties of Wellawatte
have been divided to his 6 children, by Anthonan de

Wellawatte 75 acres as follows.
To her husband, Leonard de saram's sisters grand
son Daniel Albert de Alwis, 50 acres. (out of his 3 children
Henry died young, as such Leo de Alwis received 25 acres and
daughter Lilian received 25 acres at Wellawatte)
To her husband, Leonard de Saram's sisters grand daughter
Jane Rejo Senewiratne nee de Alwis, 25 acres at Wellawatte (this
25 acres was shared in equal amount in between her 3 sons,
Edwin, Dr Arthur and Jimmy Senewiratne)
(This
75 acres, of Daniel Albert and Jane Rejo was sold to a developer

H2) British
ruled Ceylon from year 1796 to 1948
H3) Due to
the divide and rule policy of the British Governtment,
they the British gave better educational institutions to the
North. As a result more qualified people came from the North.
And it was very difficult for Sinhalese to get Governtment jobs.
Tamil people got clerical jobs in Governtment
service and in 1920's many were living as boarders in the land
side of Wellawatte. Doing
the governtment job staying as a boarder and remiting part of
the money back to family in North.
But When the de Saram, and connected families
decided to sell their land to developers in 1920's. Developers
blocked out the Mahawellawatte coconut land, and roads were made
and named. At that point tamil people who were working in
governtment service and living as boarders in the land side of
Wellawatte, bought blocks of land, applied for loans from banks
and built houses in the sea side of Wellawatte. As a result
Wellawatte became a majority tamil living suburb after 1930.
I) Anthonan de Saram's great grandson Leonard de
Saram b 1814 received 75 acres at Mahawellawatte and a large
extent of land in Galkissa, which includes the Galkissa walauwa and
the property close to the walauwa including the land, where the
present day Galkissa cemetery has been built.

J) As Leonard de Saram did
not have children, after his death, his wife Susana Hetroyda de Saram nee de Alwis
gifts the properties to Leonard de Saram's sister's grand
children Daniel Albert
de Alwis and Jane
Rejo de Alwis who married Thomas Senewiratne. (Leonard de Saram had
75 acres at Wellawatte and 20 acres at Galkissa)
And thereby Daniel Albert de Alwis
received 50 acres at Wellawatte, His son Leo de Alwis in 1925,
sold his 25 acres at Wellawatte
and built the Samudragiri
walauwa in de Saram road. Mt Lavinia. The property he
received in Galkissa was property close to Galkissa walauwa, and
property from Galle road to the sea, which was acquired by the
govt in 1844, with compensation., to build the Galkissa cemetery and
a low income housing scheme.
Daniel Albert de Alwis had 3
children. Leo, Henry and Lilian. Henry died young.
Lilian got some land in
Terance Avenue. And 25 acres at Wellawatte. She married Stephen
Senewiratne. (Stephen
was involved in the Duff house murder case) Her son was Terance.
Terance Avenue was
named after him. Lilian's property in Terrance Avenue was sold
to her cousin Edwin Seneviratne in 1928.
Leo de Alwis had property
in Mihindu Mawatha which he sold to his cousin Edwin Senewiratne
in 1928. Also received 25 acres at Wellawatte.
Jane Rejo de Alwis
received 25 acres at wellawatte, Which was given to her 3 sons.
The land for the park opposite the cemetery may have been
acquired.
Helena Eliza de Alwis received 2 acres of
Liyanaparangiya watte, where the
Galkissa walauwa had been built in 1820. She gifted the Walauwa
to her 2 children Daniel and Jane.
Daniel and Jane de Alwis
both jointly received the Galkissa walauwa.
After the death of Daniel
and jane, the Galkissa Walauwwa was owned by Daniel's 3
children, Leo, Lilian and Henry. Also by Jane's 3 children
Edwin, Arthur and Jimmy. Thereby each got 1/6th share of the
Galkissa Walauwa.
Jane's 3 children, Edwin
Arthur and Jimmy sold the 25 acres they received in Wellawatte
in 1928 to property developers who blocked out and sold mainly
to the tamil community.
I have come across a deed
where the 3 Senewiratne brothers sell 10 acres at Wellawatte for
Rs 222, 000 on
16/3/1928.
Edwin from his share in
Wellawatte from sale proceeds bought Leo de Alwis's land in
Mihindu mawatha and also purchased Lilian's land in Terrance
Avenue. Arthur from Wellawatte proceeds developed his Colombo
property, while Jimmy had a lavish lfe style from the Wellawatte
proceeds.
Edwin Senewiratne's 2
children, Gertrude and Lionel sold their 24 perches at No 36
Rajasinghe Road Wellawatte, in 1971 to Mr Cader, for Rs 120,
000.
I assume the 300 acres at
Galkissa stretched from present day Arpico in Dehiwela to beyond
St Thomas's College. Mount Lavinia. And the Mahawellawatte
property of 400 acres included the present day Rajasinghe Road
beyond Wellawatte Junction.
Thombu
Index of the Dutch period was
done after the 1740's. And it shows that Anthonan de Saram's son
Gankanda Arachige Louis
de Saram Wirasingha Siriwardena b 1730 had land in
Wellawatte. Peter de Saram's GGGF was Louis de Saram Wirasinghe
Siriwardena. According to Thombu Index William and Abraham de
Saram had land in Galkissa.
K1) Wellawatte, in the
southernmost limit of Colombo, is such a hive of activity today
that it is hard to believe it was a sparsely populated place a
little over a century ago. Its Sinhala meaning, ‘sandy garden’,
itself suggests a rather deserted area.
It was then dominated by a few burgher families of
European origin. In fact, much of the land on the seaside is
said to have been a vast coconut estate owned by a Burgher gentleman named
Charlemont Jonathan
Gauder, after whom and whose relatives many of the roads
such as Charlemont,
Frederica, Collingwood, Alexandra and Frances are named.
Today, however it is referred to as ‘Little Jaffna’ after
its large Tamil population.
This para above refers to a
burgher gentleman Charlmont
Jonathan Gauder who
owned land in Wellawatte. In fact he had married Amelia Caroline de Saram.
Father of Amelia de Saram was Herbert John de Saram b 1870
who married Henrietta Augusta Heilmann.
Amelia de Saram is a
descendent of Domingo de Saram Wanigasekera Ekanaike Atapattu
Mudaliyar b1720 . And Domingo's
father was Thomas de Saram Wanigasekara Ekanaike b approx
1690.
1 Alexander de Saram b1658
2 (1) Anthonan
de Saram
2 (2) Thomas de Saram
Wanigasekara Ekanaike b approx 1690 (may be a son of
Alexander de Saram) (3 children)
(Thomas de Saram's
children seem to have married from th burgur community, creating
a 2hd de Saram family tree.)
3 Domingo de Saram
Wanigasekara Ekanaike b1720 +Dona Petronella (4 children)
4 Christoffel Henricus de Saram Maha Mudaliyar b1755
d1842 +Cornelia Henrietta Philepsz (6 children)
5 Johannes Henricus de Saram b1795-d1858 + Frances Treherne (8 children)
6 Fredrick
John de Saram b1822 d1871 +Arnoldina Henrietta Martensz (12 children)
7 John Henricus de Saram b1844 d1897 +Amelia Caroline
Morgan (4 children)
8 Herbert John de Saram b1870 d1930 + Henrietta Augusta
Heilmann (4
children)
9 Amelia
Caroline de Saram (b approx 1890) + Christian Charloment
Gauder b1872 d1939
Thomas de Saram Wanigasekara Ekanaike may
have been a son of Alexander
de Saram b 1658. Alexander de Saram appears to be the
founder of the de Saram name. Alexander de Saram Mohandiram
Salpita Korale and his son Anthonan de Saram Mudaliyar took
the undeveloped lands of Wellawatte
and Galkissa
approx 400 acres and 300 acres on lease and planted coconut.
They were paid for planting coconut by the Dutch Govt.
Subsequently on 20/7/1730 16, 000 coconut trees approx 250 acres
at Maha Wellawatte was purchased by Anthonan de Saram from the
Dutch Govt for 1355 Rix Dollars. Thomas de Saram may have had
about 100 acres. (this
area seems to be close to Savoy cinema)
So I think the Gauder
gentleman got the Wellawatte land from his wife Amelia de Saram.
And an article says Charlmont, Fredricka,
Collingwood, Alexandra and Frances roads of Wellawatte are
named after Gauder's and Amelia's relatives names.
Anthonan de Saram's
GGSon was Leonard de
Saram (b1814)who
inherited
75 acres at Wellawatte. As he did not have children his grand
nephew Daniel Albert de
Alwis (d1903)inherited
50 acres from Wellawatte. And his grand niece Jane Rejo de Alwis
(d1915) inherited 25 acres at Wellawatte. Jane married Thomas Senewiratne
and had 3 sons. Edwin,
Arthur and James Senewiratne.
I have seen a copy of a deed
where the above 3 Senewiratne brothers had sold 9 acres and 40
perches at
Wellawatte for Rs 222, 000 in 1928. to one Peiris, who may have
blocked out and sold to the tamil community. Location of the
land was Rajasinghe Road,
bordering Galle Road.
Edwin Senewiratne
was my grandfather from my mother's side.
Available records show that in the inter-war
years, especially the 1920s, there were Tamils serving
government or as company clerks who were settled in Perera Lane,
Hampden Lane and Fernando’s Lane. There were others living as
boarders in places such as Boswell Place and High Street until
as late as the 1960s. Over time, they would have amassed enough
wealth to buy properties there and get down their families.
Before this, they had to look after their families up north and
used to remit much of their salaries via money order through the
Wellawatte Post Office.
Another community that moved in fairly early
were the Moors. In fact, there is a Moor Road on the seaside of
Wellawatte. There is also a very large mosque, one of the
largest in Colombo, on Galle Road.
So here we have it. It was the settlement here
of various minority communities that facilitated the transition
of Wellawatte from a largely uptown residential area to the
booming downtown area it is today. With the coming of the
Tamils, the famous vegetarian restaurants of the area boomed and
when the Moors came, the “Muslim hotels” were not long in
coming. Over time, other restaurants and sweet houses to meet
the varied tastes of its mixed population followed. And so we
have the culinary paradise that is Wellawatte today.

L1) History of Galkissa
Walauwa
Galkissa Walauwa, is situated in the Western
Province, in the border of Dehiwela and Mount Lavinia. It is
built in the land side in the land called Liyanaparangiyawatte
in present day Mihindu Mawatha.
Galkissa Walauwa inner portion only 128 perches, Lot C in plan
1366.
By the year 2024, Galkissa Walauwa will be 204
years old. The land area of the (upstair) walauwa, would have
been about 20 acres, from Arpico to Terrance Avenue (land side), (Dharmapala Mawatha to
Dudly Senanayake Mawatha (sea
side)and from the walauwa to the sea.
Galkissa Walauwa was built by Louis de Saram in 1820
(Mohandiram Salpita
Korale)
Louis de Saram b1754, was married to Elena de
Alwis. They had 2 children, Leonard de Saram b1814 and Depanchy
de Saram. b1820
After the death of Louis de Saram, his son Leonard
de Saram, became the owner of Galkissa Walauwa.
Leonard de Saram
Wirasinghe Siriwardena was born on
5/11/1814-d5/3/1872 (Mohandiram, Peace officer and deputy
Cornor). He married (M2/8/1847) Susana Hetroyda de Alwis (b approx 1830) (d
4/4/1901) . But they did not have children. He inherited the
Galkissa Walauwa property and 75 acres coconut land from
Mahawellawatte, in Wellawatte.
Anthonan Wirasinghe Siriwardhana de Saram Mudaliyar
in 1730 purchased 360 acres in Mahawellawatte. (Leonard de Saram was a great grand son
of Anthonan de Saram. Leonard de Saram's sister was Depanchy de
Saram.)
Depanchy de Saram
married Don Daniel Siegbertus de Alwis Gunathilake
Samarasinghe. They had a daughter named Helena Eliza de Alwis, b
approx 1840-d1887.
Helena Eliza de Alwis d1887, (47 years) married
Abraham de Alwis Wijesinghe Siriwardena b approx 1830. (m approx 1857). It
appears that Abraham de Alwis and Susana Hetroyda de Alwis were
brother and sister. There is also evidence, that after the death
of Helena Eliza in 1887, Abraham married again to Hetioida
Pieris.
Time events
A) Leonard

his wife Susana Hetroyda de Alwis (1830-1900)becomes the
owner of the Galkissa Walauwa properties and 75 acres at
Mahawellawatte, Wellawatte.
Leonard de Saram's sister was Depanchy de Saram who

after her death the Galkissa Walauwa premises had been inherited
by her 2 children in equal share, undivided to Daniel Albert de Alwis and

Grace Rosalin Dias Bandaranaike (d21/2/1922)and had 3 children, Leonard,
Lilian and Henry.
Jane Rejo de

Walauwa.
H)Jimmy
Senewiratne (1906-1969) bought the
1/6th shares of the five people and became the owner of the
Galkissa walauwa in 13/9/ 1923.
(Deed attested by CEA Samarakkody.) He settled in
Galkissa Walauwa with his wife Millicent Samarakkody, around
1928. (Millicent b
1911-1995, married at 17 years age.)
I)It is said that in the 1930's Jimmy Senewiratne had horses
and a tiger in the premises. But in the early 1940's due to
financial difficulty, he had to rent the walauwa and move out.
And later on, he regained the walauwa. Jimmy died in 1969.
Jimmy
had 3 children,
Wasanthi Senewiratne married Marshal Wijesinghe,
and had a daughter Ayanthi
Ranjith Senewiratne b1939 married Deepthi Malalgoda
and has a son Hirantha
Dr
Tissa Senewiratne 1940-2023, . married Srini Attygalle and had
daughter Thisani and son Chaminda.
J)In 1970, the walauwa building and immediate
property now belonging to Jimmy Senewiratne was divided among his children.
The walauwa building was given to Dr Tissa Senewiratne, and the
other 2 children built houses on the land. As at present, the
Galkissa walauwa building is owned and occupied by the two
children of late Dr Tissa Senewiratne (1940-2023)
What Helena
Eliza de Alwis received in (1-Liyanaparangiyawatte)
above, lot B containing 121 perches
(west by high road,
east by galkissa walauwa) was given to her daughter Jane Rejo de Alwis who
gave it to her 3 sons. Edwin Dr Arthur and Jimmy Senewiratne. (Of this land 20
perches had been sold to Godfry Perera in 1950, and the balance
to Mr Gunasekara who had the Elect Industries till year 2000,
and after that rented to No Limit Garments)
What Helena
Eliza de Alwis received in (1-Liyanaparangiyawatte)
above, Lot A
containing 101 perches was given to her son Daniel Albert de Alwis,
who gave it to his son Leo
de Alwis. Leo de Alwis in 1928 has sold this block to his
cousin Edwin
Seneviratne, which after Edwin's death went to his wife
Eugine Seneviratne. Eugine gave her properties in 1970 to her 2
children. and lot A evolved to her daughter Gertrude who sold
part and the balance gave to her son Manjula in year 2004 and
grandson Kusan in year 2018.
What Helena
Eliza received in (2-Kongahawatte and
Nelligahawatte) above seems to have been divided to Daniel Albert de Alwis
and Jane Rejo de Alwis.
Daniels share had been sold by Leo de Alwis, while Jane's share
was blocked out and sold in 1960 by her grand daughter, Gertrude
de Livera nee Seneviratne.
Similarly a small portion of property opposite the
cemetery was acquired for a children's playground.

signed, regarding the Mahawellawatte properties by Lilian
Senewiratne nee de Alwis and Stephen Senewiratne, Leo de Alwis,
EH Senewiratne, AF Senewiratne and JC Senewiratne.
It is believed after that the Wellawatte 75 acres,
had been sold in sections.
I believe Leo de Alwis while staying at Galkissa
Walauwa, built the Samudragiri Walauwa in his wife Alexandra
Dias Bandaranaike's inherited land in de Saram Road Mt Lavinia,
the year 1925.)
Leo de Alwis

L2) History
of Udaha Walauwa
Udaha
Walauwa built
around year 1800
Udaha Walauwa in Mihindu Mawatha, may have been
built by Wirasingha Siriwardena William de Saram archchi
mahatmaya, b approx 1760. His son was Cornelis de Saram, b1790.
He married Dandeniyage Madalina de Alwis, from Dandeniya
Walauwa. Their son was Solomon de Saram b1820 who married
Dandeniyage Serberthina de Alwis.
Their
son was Peter Thomas de Saram b4/11/1853-d25/9/1910. He married
Petrenella Victoria Kuruppu from Panadura Wasala Walauwa.
Peter
de Saram
They had 5 children
Cecilia de Saram + VSDS Wikremanayake
Victoria de Saram +Samuel Wijesinghe
Eugine de Saram + Edwin Seneviratne of Galkissa
Walauwa.
Teddy de Saram + Agnes Kuruppu (Panadura)
Christy de Saram + Maggie Senewiratne
Udaha Walauwa came to Christy de Saram. Later her
daughter Lorna Senewiratne stayed with husband Eddie
Senewiratne.
M) Galkissa Lands
In the kings time around the year 1510, Mt Lavinia
area was called Lihiniyakanda
or Lihiniyagala. This was due to the many Lihiniya birds
in that area. Later this area was called Galkissa. Kissa is a
obsolete name for rock.
In 1805 British Governor Thomas Maitland made his
Governor's residence, where the present day Mount Lavinia Hotel
exist. He had a affair with dancer gypsy girl Lovenia Aponsua.
And it is said he had made a tunnel to go and meet her. The
Governor Thomas Maitland, named his residence Mount Lavinia
House. There had been several Governors living there. But in
1877 that building was developed into Mount Lavinia Hotel.
Probably after that the suburb was called Mount Lavinia.
(Because
during Dutch period, this area was refered as Galkissa year 1650-1796)
In
internet in a website It says-The
first village to the South of Colombo was Galkissa (Mt Lavinia). In the
time of Governor
Rijkloff van Goens (1664-1675)the
village was rented for ten years on the condition that 8000
coconut trees would be planted, there over the period and a sum
of 200 rix dollars also be paid yearly.
In internet in a website called Full text of Ceylon
and the Hollander 1658-1796 in para 82 it says the following.
The Company had various gardens, including a tobacco plantation
in Negombo and a coconut land of 15, 000 trees at Galkissa which
were leased out.
land with 15, 000 coconut trees equals 300 acres.
It is
believed Anthonan de
Saram bought 300 acres in Galkissa from the Dutch
Governtment and would have
divided among 6 of his children.

O) Lands of St
Thomas's College Mount Lavinia.
(See N2 2 (2) above-Harry Dias Bandaranayake)
Jeronis de Soysa
Mudliyar (1797-1862) and
his brother Susew de
Soysa Mudliyar (1809-1881), were
successful businessman in the 19th century. They had coffee
plantations and were idustrialist. They purchased many coconut
estates in Ceylon.
Possibly in
1856, Susew de Soysa bought the estate of Sir Harry Dias
Bandaranaike, which he inherited from his father. (see above N 2 (2))The
estate may have been about 15 acres coconut called Mahawatte,
sold for around SP
550. In 1857, Harry Dias Bandaranaike bought a land in cinnomon
gardens for SP 550. (page
76 Sinhala families vol 3 of Sir Paul Pieris)
Jeronis de Soysa in his latter years turned to
Christianity. And he built the Holy Emmanuel Church in
Moratuwa, on 27/12/1857.
Susew de
Soysa's endowment of the Mahawatte estate, Mt Lavania to the
Holy Emanuel Church in 1867, was later utilised by the
Bishop of Colombo for purposes that included the relocating
of S Thomas' College. Mudaliyer Susew de Soysa passed away
in 1881.
(Susew
de Soysa the brother of Jeronis de Soysa, had gifted the coconut
estate he bought in Galkissa to the Holy Emmanuel Church in
1867, for the maintenance of the church.)
Holy Emmanuel church now established, its 2hd Reverend was Earnest Arthur Copleston from 1883 to
1889. Rev Copleston, later became Bishop of Colombo from 1903 to 1924.
St Thomas's
College was established
in Mutwal in 1852. But by the year 1919, at the time of Warden
Stone, the school wanted to expand and wanted to buy some land.
And it is said, that around 1919, the Holy Emmanuel church had
some financial difficulty, and wanted to sell their estate in
Galkissa.
Mudaliyer
Susew de Soysa (1809-1881)
(brother of Jeronis) gifted an estate opposite the Mount Lavinia Hotel for its maintenance,
which was later transferred to relocate S. Thomas' College. [7][15][30][34] (This land originally
donated to the church for the maintenance of the church. But
in 1919 the Lord Bishop of Colombo and trustee of Emmanuel
Church, Ernest Arthur Copleston, sold the land to the trustees
of St Thomas's College.)
St Thomas's College.
St Thomas's ordinance of No 13 of 1913, the Society and Ernest
Arthur Copleston, then Bishop of Colombo as trustees were empowered to
sell the land and buildings, forming the said college and to
purchase other land and buildings, and to hold the same in trust
for the purpose and objects, and subject to the terms and
conditions, of the said grant, and whereas in the exercise of
the said powers the said trustees have sold the said land and
buildings.
Mt Lavinia
(Sir Harry Dias
Bandaranayake may
have sold his share of land called Mahawatte he inherited from
his father, Jacobus DB to Susew de Soysa in 1856. Sir Harry probably with
proceeds bought a land in cinnomon gardens for SP 550 in 1857,
page 76 SF vol 3 states. Susew de Soysa later in 1867 gifts the
Mt Lavinia block, called Mahawatte to Holy Emmanuel Church Moratuwa,
to be the church's estate. Subsequently in 1919, when the church
needed money, Rev Copleston, trustee of the Holy Emanuel Church
sells the Mahawatte land in Mt Lavinia to the trustees of St
Thomas's College. At that time Warden of STC was Rev
Arthur Stone 1901-1924)
By deed No 1882, dated 25/4/1919 attested by
Leslie William Fredrick de Saram the said trustees of the
school, purchased from Ernest Arthur Copleston, then Lord
Bishop of Colombo (1903-1924),
as trustee of Holy Emmanuel Church Moratuwa, certain land and
building of Mt Lavinia.
In the year 1919 St Thomas's College shifted to
Mt Lavinia.
And on 7/12/1928, mortgaged the said land
and buildings, situated at Mt Lavinia, afforesaid to the
incorporated trustees of Church of England in Ceylon to secure
the repayment to the said incorporated trustees of the sum of Rs
45, 000, advanced by them.
Subsequently it is said, the small clubs area
about 3 acres was donated to STC by Sir James Peter
Obeyesekere 2.
It is also said that Sir Solomon Dias
Bandaranaike had purchased the old warden's bunglow and office
area and donated to the school.
Later in the 1950's PEP Deraniyagala sold 4 acres
to the school, where the Tennis courts have been built.

R) Mount
Lavinia Hotel
The Mount Lavinia Hotel, in Mount Lavinia, Sri Lanka, is a 275-room hotel, situated at 100
Hotel Road in Mount Lavinia. It is recognised as
one of the oldest and most famous hotels in the country. It has
been continuously operating as a hotel since 1947, but was
initially constructed as the governor's residence in 1806.
In 1805 Sir Thomas Maitland
was appointed as the second governor of British Ceylon. He had acquired
land at "Galkissa" (Mount Lavinia) and decided
in 1806 to construct a personal residence there.
Legend has it that at a welcoming party held in his
honour upon his arrival in the island he saw Lovina Aponsuwa, a
local mestizo dancer, whose father was the
headman of the dancing troupe. Maitland fell in love with
Aponsuwa, who had been born to Portuguese and Sinhalese parents. During
construction, the governor arranged to build a secret tunnel
between Aponsuwa's house which was located nearby, one end
inside her house and the other inside his wine cellar, so that
the lovers could meet in secret.
Sir James Mackintosh, a friend of the governor,
wrote in 1810 that it was "a bungalow of one storey, rustic on
the outside, but handsomely laid out, and furnished
beautifully".
Sir Thomas Maitland was recalled from Ceylon in
1811 and appointed the governor of Malta,
where he died a bachelor.
The statue of 'Lady' Lavinia, as the girl later
became known, can be found in the middle of a water fountain at
the entrance of the hotel.
The next governor, Sir Robert Brownrigg recommended a
further purchase of the surrounding land, 35 acres (14 ha)
from 14 landowners for 18, 000 Rix dollars.
Sir Edward Barnes
during his second term as governor, undertook significant
extensions and improvements to the building. [1]
"Barnes set to work on his grand plans. Mount Lavinia was to be
his ultimate creation; a magnificent residence fit for the Grand
Master, such as Versailles was to Louis XIV". [2]
British military engineers redesigned the house on
the lines of an Italian villa. Captain Edward Sanderson of the
Royal Engineers, was the designer and master builder under
Barnes’ watchful eye. The building was modelled on the ‘Banqueting House’ in
Whitehall, a creation of architect Inigo Jones, also known as the ‘English Palace’. [2]
The Banqueting House was refurbished by architect Sir John Soane. "Not only does the date of the refacing
of the Banqueting House coincide perfectly with the building of
Mount Lavinia but a marked similarity in style is also apparent
between the two buildings. Inigo Jones had used the Ionic and
Corinthian orders, the height of urban sophistication. At Mount
Lavinia, which offered a country setting, Sanderson used the
simpler Doric order and superimposed the Ionic. This pattern had
been used by Palladio in building his Palazzo Chiericati in Vicenza,
Italy. "[2]
The works were completed in 1830 however in 1831
Barnes was appointed as Commander in-Chief in India.
His successor Sir Robert
Wilmot-Horton chose not to reside at Mount Lavinia and it
was therefore recommended that the building be disposed of. In
1842 the British government sold the building at auction, with
Rev. Dr. John MacVicar, the Colonial Chaplain purchasing it. The
mansion was subsequently converted into an asylum for the
insane.
In 1877 the government constructed a railway line along the
coast (the second
railway line in Ceylon). The railway line passed in front of
Mount Lavinia, connecting the house directly to the harbor at
Colombo. Seeing the potential for profit, developers bought the
dilapidated mansion and turned it into an opulent hotel, The
Mount Lavinia Grand Hotel. Later two dditional wings were
added to the building.
