RAMBUKPOTHA SENEVIRAJA - Family #3117

According to available official records, the full family name, in its general usage, and inclusive of the "Wasagama", the titular names and the honorifics will read as Rambukpotha Seneviratne. Family lore has it that the ancestors embarked from Tamralipiti with Theri Sanghamitta and arrived at Jambukola in Lanka as attendants to the Sacred Bodhi. Accordingly, they claim descent from the Maha Bodhi Nayaka clan of the Sakaya Vamsa. In keeping with this ancestral background, the vamsa nama and the kula nama of the Sakaya Vamsa Maha Bodhi Nayaka clan should precede the Vasagama and the Nila Nama.

Hence, the complete family name should read Sakaya Vamsa Maha Bodhinayaka Rambukpotha Seneviratna. This version of the family name appears in one record where the family scribes have identified one Rambukpotha Seneviraja of Prince Kumarasinha in the Uva circa 1638.

During the first quarter of the seventeenth century Uva, like Matale, was a Principality where Prince Kumarasinha, the Kings elder nephew ruled. The younger nephew of the King, Prince Vijayapala, had his seat of power at Godapola in the Maha Disawani of Matale. King Senarath had reserved the main seat of power at Kandy for his own son who was later enthroned as Rajasinha II. The mother of all three of them was Kusumasana Devi, alias Princess Dona Katharina, the daughter of the deposed former King Karaliyadde Bandara, the Queen who died on 20 July 1613.

After the death of King Senarath in 1635 AD, the power struggle between the three Princes ended up with the demise of Prince Kumarasinha; the fleeing of Prince Vijayapala to the Portuguese and the annexation of the Uva by Rajasinha II (1635-1687).

The Rambukpotha family of later years and traceable descent go as far back as the days of Prince Kumarasinha of Uva and claim descent from one Rambukpotha Seneviraja. He was probably one of the commanders of the Kings forces that Robert Knox refers to and could be one of those Chiefs who led the forces of Sinhale against the invading forces of the Portuguese Captain,Constantine de Sa, in 1630 and defeated them in the battle fields of Randeniwela. In all probability he is the same Rambukpota Seneviraja from the Wasagama of Rambukpotha in Badulla who was the Rate Adikaram of Uva and Disawa of Matara in the year 1630. He was probably trhe same "Rampot" Maha Disawa of Uva from 1650-1656, who Paul E Pieris in his work "The Dutch Power in Ceylon 1602-1670" refers to as the "Rampot Adikaram" of Matara c1649. The only preceding ancestor of this "Rampot" Rate Adikaram of Uva, on record, is the Rambukpotha Hetaprenage Muhamdiram of 1563 which reference is found in the work "The Chieftans of Ceylon" by J C Van Sanden.

There is a story related by the Rambukpotha family about how their ancestors forced the Dutch Prisoners of war to rebuild the famous Rambukpotha Maha Walauwa, the ancestral Manor House of the family, after it was demolished and burnt to the ground by the Colonial Dutch army during an incursion at Bibilegama. The building stands on a land known as Maha Walauwa Watta located in Rilpola Korale of the Yatikinda Division in the District of Badulla. Waluwa Wata is a piece of land about 3 acres in extent and is bounded on the East by the "Battawatte Kandura" (ravine of Battawatta) and on the northern side by a larege stone fence that borders the "Rambukpotha Vihara" premises which too belonged to the same family.

The vengeful rebuilder of the Rambukpotha Maha Walauwa, in contemporary fashion, should be Rambukpotha Seneviratna Mudaliyar of 1740 AD, who, in all probability, was the grandson of Rambukpotha "Rampot" Rate Adikaram, the Maha Disawa of Uva from 1650-1665, and Disawa of Matara in 1649, during the reign of King Rajasinha II.

Members of the family of Rambukpotha Seneviraja, hailing from Uda Dumbara, loyal and faithful to the dynnasty of Vimaladharmasuriya I (1594-1605) were chosen among a few others from equally influential and trustworthy families, to safeguard the provinces of Uda and Patha Dumbara, Tamankaduwa, Uva, Wellassa, Bintenne and even Matara, he North Eastern and South Eastern lands of the Kandyan Kingdom. Such chices created a warant of security which lasted up to the reign f King Veera Parakrama Narendra Sinha 1707-1737 when the balance of power gradually began to tilt in favor of the Chiefs and the inhabitants of Palle Gampaha from that of Uda Gampaha. The family from the village of Rambukpotha in Dumbara, like the "Galagoda" Family from Hewavissa Korala in lower Hewaheta, sent to Uva by dependant Kings to safeguard a territory so vital, necessirily had to settle down in a village close to the provincial capital of Badulla. The village they settled down in Uva proper keeping with local tradition came to bear the village name of the settlers. This village name, "Rambukpotha" is found two miles away on the Badulla-Passara Road. An Ola Sannasa or a Royal Grant dated Saka 1688 in the month of Bak, April-May in the Year AD 1767, given by King Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe, 1747-1782, gifting an extent of 158 Amunams (largest Sinhala unit if Sinhalese Wetland Surface Measure) of land to a lady of the Rambukpota Family identifies the grantee as Rambukpotha Seneviratna Mudaliyar Doniyandewena, Wasanahamy Ethana. This grant has been done for her recognition fr her faithful services as a lady in waiting to the Queen. "PalleMaha Wasalata pakshapathawa sondasithin dukgenna sitina nisaa" Wasanahamy Ethana, the daughter of Rambukpotha Seneviratna Mudaliyar of 1740 by virtue of this Grant received lands in the villages of Rambukpotha, Bogoda, Madugastalawe, Morahera, Mediwaka, Mettigahatanne, Wellawaya, and in the town of Badulla, to name a few locations as a result of having large land grants outside Uda Dumbara, members of the succeeding generations of the Rambukpotha family naturally had to go toi Uva and Sabaragamuwa, occupy these lands, live in places like Morahela and establish much contact with the leading families of Uva and Sabaragamuwa. In such circumstances, the family got dispersed and the descendants of the variuous branches came to possess lands in far off places. Some of these are retained by them even at the dawn of the new Millenium.

Also known as Mirahawatta Mohottala and Mirahawatta Lekam in 1815. Was the Kankanama of the Hetapana (Sitapanage) or the Headman of the Royal Bed Chamber of King Sri Vikrama, and he was also the Kuruwe Lekam , the Chief of the Department in charge of capturing Elephants from 1815-1818. He was the last of the Kandyan Chiefs to hold this office having being reappointed by Governor Brownrigg in the interval. 2 Kattekelle Rambukpotha Mohottala, Disawa Mohottala by the year 1816. Led the freedom fighters against the British even after his father and younger brother had surrendered in 1817. Captured at Digulana by the people of Magam Pattu from the adjoining District of Hambantota in Lower Uva on Jan 24 1890, where he was found alone and lame many months later. Three months later a court martial sentenced him to death. Sulu Disawe of Polwatte, Pattipola and Wellassa from 1822-1829. In 1830 the Pelwatte part of Wellassa was added to his Disawa and he remained Sulu Disawa until 1845. Bogoda and Rilpola Korales were added to his Disawani between 1835 and 1845. Continued as Sulu Disawa of Badulu Pandu, Sonrantota Palatha, Ripola, Bogoda, Oya Palatha, Passara Korale, and Pattipola Korale until his death. Succeeded his father as Basnayake Nilame of Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devale from about the year 1823. Died 1852 + Wariyagama Kumarihamy (sister of Wariyagama Atapattu Nilame from Nava Yodun Korale in Sabaragamuwa) and the family was in Passaramulla in Kadawatu Korala near Morahela in Uduwagampattu where the Rambukpotha had Royal Grants by way of the Sannasa.

5 James Alexander Rambukpotha aka Rambukpotha Kuruwita Korale Mahatmaya, b:28 Oct 1877 at Badulla. entered Trinity College on 18 July 1888 as a nine year old boy to be the 690th student of the College. Completed his public school education at St Thomas' College Mt Lavinia and took to cricket and played for the College XI from 1894-1897. Commenced public life as a clerk at the Kachcheri in Ratnapura and became Korale Mahatmaya of Talapitigampathu of Kadawathu Korale in 1900. Later, in state service he officiated in Kandy and Kegalle as Rate Mahatmaya and had retired before 1940. Was knon as Rambukpotha Kurivita Rate Mahatmaya. Also known by his family as Kuruvita Korala Mahatmaya. + Roslyn Molamure Kumarihamy daughter of James Christopher Molamure, Police Magistrate Gampola, oldest sister of Arthur Molamure (first cousins of Sir Francis Molamure, Speaker of the first Parliament of Ceylon. By 1900 he was Rate mahatmaya of Uda Hewaheta and residing at Attanakumbura, a village in PalleGampaha of Mathurata, and addressed as Rambukpotha Attanakumbura Rate Mahatmaya on rare occasions. + Mampitiya Rambukpotha Loku Kumarihamy, youngest sister of Tikiri Bandara Mampitiya Disawa of Yatinuwara and the older daughter of Mampitiya Amurthastha Navaratne Wickremasinghe Senanayake Pandithawahala Mudiyanse alias Mampitiya Ranawana Rate Mahatmaya & Giragama Kumarihamy (daughter of Kuda Mudiyanse Giragama, the Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa from 1882-1897) This was the first marriage of a male from the Rambukpotha family outside the provinces of Uva and Sabaragamuwa.

5 [1] Rupawathy Rambukpotha Katugaha Kumarihamy, b:1894, d:22 Apr 1964, attended Clarence Memorial School as a five year old in 1900, 46th student, (later Hillwood College Kandy), the premier ladies school that was established by the earliest missionaries of the Zenana Missionary Society of The Church of England. The school was started in 1890 by Ms Elizabeth Bellerby and Ms Ethel James and was exclusively meant to provide English Education to the young ladies from the Kandyan Gentry. Many years earlier the Church Missionary Society of England had founded a College for the education for the sons of Kandyan Chieftains and it had been named The Kandy Collegiate School in 1872 and later renamed to Trinity College in 1876 by which name it still functions today, in the year 2006. She left Hullwood College on 24 Oct 1910 having seen her second sister Seelawathie also enter the school three years earlier on 12 Nov 1907 as its 115th student. Her contemporaries at Hillwood were Nandu Menika Rambukwella, Muriel Kapuwatte, Maria Keppetipola, Dorothy, Ethel, & Alice Paranagama, Amelia Madugalle, Daisy Dunuwila, Damayantha Panabokke, Seela, Magantha, & Suja Aluvihare, Manthri Bibile and Suja Dullewe. Lived at Ranawana Walauwa with her widowed mother and siblings after the demise of her father. Later she moved to Giragama Walauwa, the residences of her maternal uncle, the late Tikiri Bandara Mampitiya Disawa of Yatinuwara. It was at this Walauwa that she married her paternal first cousin later in he same year. She spent the early part of her married life at her husbands residence at Katugaha Walauwa which was a sprawling mansion at Puwakgodamulla within the town of Badulla. Later she moved to Lewwe Walauwa, another large country residence built by her husband in the village of Katugaha on Lewwegoda Estate in close proximity to the Katugaha Maha Walauwa. She occupied both residences based on her conveniences and also accomodated her ageing mother, Mampitiya Rambukpotha Kumarihamy, with her most of the time. Small in stature, but extremely fair in complexion, with a round face and thinning head of curly grey hair she resembled he late Queen Victoria of England in many ways. Her own children and her three nephews used to call her by that name whenever they would banter. A Queen she was to all of the family right through her life until her rather early demise which took place in Kandy in 1964. + [2] Heen (Loku) Bandara Katugaha, b:circa 1886, d:4-Mar-1946, attended Trinity College, Kandy (1731st student on 4 Oct 1897 when Rev H P Napier-Clavering was Principal), appointed in 1913 as Rate Mahatmaya of Yatikinda and by 1924 was the chief resident of the 'Katugaha Walauwa' in Mahawelagama Badulla, which by then bore the assessment number 116 Mahiyangana Road, Badulla. By the early 1940's he had developed and grown a tea estate of 50 odd acres in the village of Katugaha which became to be known as "Lewwegoda Estate" in later years. He also built a new residence on the same property. This sprawling counntry house was known as "Gal Walauwa" by the common folk due to its extensive coarse masonry exterior rubble walls. For the rest of their lives they made sure that their two residences were "open house" to all their relatives, very specially to the three young nephews of his wife. in 1910 (3115)

Did not continue her education at Hillwood and spent her late teens and her youth with her mother at her maternal uncles residence at Giriyagama Walauwa at Alakolanga in Pilimatalawa. She attended to much of the official and private work of her ailing maternal uncle Tikiri Bandara Mampitiya Disawa of Yatinuwara. This period enabled her to gather more from the lives and experiences with her relatives and associates in the Central Province much more than her older sister and her three brothers, who spent most of their adult life in Uva. Her mother spent most of her adult life with her older daughter in Badulla after the demise of her only brother in 1937 which required her to manage whatever properties that belonged to her mother. This enabled her to have many visits from the retinue of the late Disawa. + George Madugalle (second son of Punchi Bandara Madugalle of Uda Dumbara & Anulawathie Nugawela Madugalle Kumarihamy). The marriage took place at her maternal uncles residence, the Giragama Walauwa, in 1937. She went to live at her husbands home, The Madugalle Walauwa, in Udispattuwa Uda Dumbara, for a short period. They also spent sometime at Godakawela and Godigamuwa in Sabaragamuwa where George was stationed as a Government Servant. 5 Kuda Bandara Rambukpotha alias Victor Rambukpotha, b:29 Nov 1896, d:1947, was educated at Uva College, Badulla where he had an excellent academic record and carried away almost every prize awarded at the College. Absorbed into the Colonial Public Service and popularly known as Sabahapathy Thuma he was President of Village Tribunals "Rural Courts" at Wellassa and Bintenne and lived a rather carefree life. In an age where motor cars were considered a luxury he was the owner of a rare two seater model Morris Tourer bearing registration Number X 9419. He was the acting Rate Mahatmaya of Wellassa filling the vacancy created by the demise of William Bibile Rate Mahatmaya. + Sisilawathie Alias Hema Weragama Kumarihamy, b:6 Jan 1919 to the Kahande branch of the Weragama family in Matale, d:20 July 1991, m:Jan 1937. The brides father was residing at Galagedera in Uda Palatha Tumpanne. Spent a few years at her paternal residence in Galagedara after the death of her husband in order to be close to her school going twin children. In later years she went on to live with her sons at their Walauwa in Rambukpotha. She was an expert in every form of Kandyan cookery and confectionary. Always laid a splendid meal for her friends and family who visited her at any time day or night. Was always sought by her family on the occasion of alms giving on account of her culinary skills.

6 Heen Bandara Rambukpotha alias Anton (twins), b:26 Nov 1937, d:27 Aug 1977, the twin brothers attended Uva College prior to the demise of the father and later became hostellers at St Anthony's College, Katugastota. Had the extraordinary hobby of collecting cricket pictures and boasted of a voluminous collection comprising W G Grace of England, Victor Trumper, the great 'Don' from Australia and the famed three "W" of the West Indies. Both played cricket for St Anthony's College during the seasons of 1955, 56, & 57. Anton was awarded the coveted Eagle by the College for his cricketing skills. He entered the University of Ceylon Peradeniya and obtained his degree, Upper Second Class, with the subject of history as his specialty. He was attached to the Department of History at the Peradeniya University in 1964 before he joined the parallel depart,ment at the University of Vidyodya in July 1967, After his postgraduate studies and his MA from the University of Sydney in Australia. The family lived at the Walauwa built by Albert Rambukpotha in Badulla and on several estate bungalows in Ratnapura and Uda Dumbara until they finally settled down at their private residence in Watapuluwa in Kandy.

5 Madduma Bandara Rambukpotha alias Bennie Rambukpotha, b:circa 1904, he Inherited some of the spirited characteristics of his grand uncle and lived mostly away from the rest of the family in Uva and his immediate maternal relatives in Yatinuwara. His fancy for the new and the flair was to decide his fate. A visit to a performance to a Singaporean Circus in Colombo ended up with an irresistible fascination for a female trapeze artist who successfully lured him to follow her to Singapore. He set sail to Singapore without the knowledge of any one of the family, but did not fail to leave a small note to his elder sister, Rupawathy, indicating his whereabouts. Having returned to Ceylon he could not be persuaded to stay back and amidst much counseling and tears from his mother and elder sisters, Rupawathy, Seelawathy and Sumithra, went back to marry the trapeze artist, a Singaporean national of Chinese origin who subsequently bore him two daughters.

He was successfully employed by the owners f the Caxton Press of Kuala Lumpur in the Federation of Malay States. Later he became a sub-editor of the Singapore Times. He made his last visit to his family on the occasion of the wedding of his second sister, Seelawathy Rambukpotha, in 1937. Returning to Singapore in early 1938 and living at his residence in Wilkie Road in Singapore, he and his family were victims of te infamous fall of Singapore during the Second World War. During the Japanese occupation he and his family were in internment, and the last news to reach his family in Ceylon was a telegram to his mother stating that Bennie Rambukpotha had died at a Military Hospital in Singapore during the early months of Japanese Occupation. Every effort to trace his wife or the two daughters has drawn a blank to this day.

Was the first of the family to leave the shores of Ceylon and also marry a non National.

5 Punchi Bandara Rambukpotha alias Budhhadhasa Rambukpotha, b:14-Feb-1906 in Uda Hewaheta. d:24 Jun 1980 at Badulla. Lost his father when he was less than a year old. Depended on his mother and maternal uncle, Tikiri Bandara Mampitiya Disawa, for his early life education. He was found suitable to be ordained and sent under the tutelage of the Head Priest of the Urapola Viharaya in Meda Palatha Yatinuwara, and subsequently under the Head Priest of the Haramaitagala Dheerananda Pirivena in Alakolanga, which is very close to the Giragama Walauwa in Yatinuwara. Later he studied under Ven Rambukwella Siddhartha, the distinqguished scholar Monk who was a lecturer at the University of Ceylon and Senior Resident Monk at the Pirivena at Maligakande. Having completed his Monastich education and Vidyodya Pirivena, Maradana, he was ordained Ven Rambukpotha Bodhiseeha in the order of the Siyam Maha Nikaya (Siamese Sect). In 1935 he was required to succeed his paternal uncle, The Most Ven Rambukpotha Pragnasara, as the Head Priest of Seneviratne Mudalindaramaya, the family Temple at Rambukpotha in Badulla. It would be interesting to note that although all three members of the Rambukpotha family, Rambukpotha Pragnasara, Rambukpotha (Morahela) Dhammadinna, & Rambukpotha Bodhiseeha, were ordained as Monks of the Aiyam Nikaya (Siamese Sect), due to the predominance of the Amarapura Nikaya in Uva during their times, the last tow Monks of the family had to affiliate themselves to the Uva Amarapura Nikaya (Burmese Sect) by way of two separate investitures. Rambukpotha Bodhiseeha was admittedc to the Amarapura Nikaa of Uva on 11 July 1935. The Chief Priest of the Sect in Uva at that time was he Most Ven Maussagolle Ratnapalabidhana Maya Nayake Unvahanse. Ven Bodhiseeha was elevated to the position of the Most Ven Mahanayake of the Amarapura Sasana of Uva on 22 Apr 1978.

He was succeeded by his first cousin G B Katugaha in 1945 and it was during his term office that the Sri Ramakrishna Mission of India commenced and completed the construction of the Pilgrims Rest, The Sri Ramakrishna Mission Madam at Kataragama. Educated at Uva College and Trinity College Kandy, commenced life as an Agricultural Instructor in the early 1920's qualifying from among the first few batches of students of the Government School of Agriculture at Gannoruwa Peradeniya. Officiated as a Member of the Agricultural Board and was Chairman of the Badulla District Paddy Growers Association. Government Clerical Service from 1912 and by 1919 was officiating Rate Mahatmaya of Wellawassa and Wellawaya. 4 Heen Bandara Rambukpotha alias H B Rambukpotha, d:circa 1932, was assigned to the Sasana, went under the tutelage of Ven Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala at the Vidyalankara Pirivena at Kelaniya and received the Upasampada Ordainment as Rambukpotha Pragnasara Sthavira from the Chief Priest of the Godagedera Temple at Kelaniya. Succeeded his Guru to be the Chief Incumbent of the same Vihara in Kelaniya. Also the Chief Incumbent of the family Temple Seneviratne Mudalindaramaya at Rambukpotha in Badulla. E;levated in the order in 1913 by the Sangha Saba to be 16th Nayaka of the Sri Padasthana Viharaya (High Priest of the Temple on Adams Peak). Held this office up to his demise circa 1932. Photograph of him is found at the Galpottawela Raja Maha Viharaya at Pelmadulla. A part of his share of family lands named, Nika-Attakumbura and Nika-Attedepala, were sold by the public trsutee and the rest of his share devolved on the heirs of his deceased brothers.

Forfeited all rights to her fathers estate since she married in Diga + Katugaha Bandaranayake Herath Mudiyanse Tikiri Bandara, d:31-Nov-1916, lies buried amongst his ancestors at the family burial grounds Haliedda on Green Lane Drive Badulla. Rate Mahatmaya of Viyaluwa in 1890 and of Yatikinda from 1900, also known as "Katugaha Disawe" since he was honored with the title after the GA of Uva had proposed to revive this category of office holders in 1908. d:31 Nov 1916 after 31 years of public service (3115)

5 [2] Heen (Loku) Bandara Katugaha, b:circa 1886, d:4-Mar-1946, attended Trinity College, Kandy (1731st student on 4 Oct 1897 when Rev H P Napier-Clavering was Principal), appointed in 1913 as Rate Mahatmaya of Yatikinda and by 1924 was the chief resident of the 'Katugaha Walauwa' in Mahawelagama Badulla, which by then bore the assessment number 116 Mahiyangana Road, Badulla. By the early 1940's he had developed and grown a tea estate of 50 odd acres in the village of Katugaha which became to be known as "Lewwegoda Estate" in later years. He also built a new residence on the same property. This sprawling counbtry house was known as "Gal Walauwa" by the common folk due to its extensive coarse masonry exterior rubble walls. For the rest of their lives they made sure that their two residences were "open house" to all their relatives, very specially to the three young nephews of his wife. + [1] Rupawathy Rambukpotha Katugaha Kumarihamy (first cousin) in 1910. b:1894, d:22 Apr 1964, attended Clarence Memorial School as a five year old in 1900, 46th student, (later Hillwood College Kandy), the premier ladies school that was established by the earliest missionaries of the Zenana Missionary Society of The Church of England. The school was started in 1890 by Ms Elizabeth Bellerby and Ms Ethel James and was exclusively meant to provide English Education to the young ladies from the Kandyan Gentry. Many years earlier the Church Missionary Society of England had founded a College for the education for the sons of Kandyan Chieftains and it had been named The Kandy Collegiate School in 1872 and later renamed to Trinity College in 1876 by which name it still functions today, in the year 2006. She left Hullwood College on 24 Oct 1910 having seen her second sister Seelawathie also enter the school three years earlier on 12 Nov 1907 as its 115th student. Her contemporaries at Hillwood were Nandu Menika Rambukwella, Muriel Kapuwatte, Maria Keppetipola, Dorothy, Ethel, & Alice Paranagama, Amelia Madugalle, Daisy Dunuwila, Damayantha Panabokke, Seela, Magantha, & Suja Aluvihare, Manthri Bibile and Suja Dullewe. Lived at Ranawana Walauwa with her widowed mother and siblings after the demise of her father. Later she moved to Giragama Walauwa, the residences of her maternal uncle, the late Tikiri Bandara Mampitiya Disawa of Yatinuwara. It was at this Walauwa that she married her paternal first cousin later in he same year. She spent the early part of her married life at her husbands residence at Katugaha Walauwa which was a sprawling mansion at Puwakgodamulla within the town of Badulla. Later she moved to Lewwe Walauwa, another large country residence built by her husband in the village of Katugaha on Lewwegoda Estate in close proximity to the Katugaha Maha Walauwa. She occupied both residences based on her conveniences and also accomodated her ageing mother, Mampitiya Rambukpotha Kumarihamy, with her most of the time. Small in stature, but extremely fair in complexion, with a round face and thinning head of curly grey hair she resembled he late Queen Victoria of England in many ways. Her own children and her three nephews used to call her by that name whenever they would banter. A Queen she was to all of the family right through her life until her rather early demise which took place in Kandy in 1964.

5 Gunadasa (Kuda) Bandara Katugaha, GB, b:15-Mar-1892, attended Trinity College, Kandy (2895th student on 17 Jan 1906 when A G Fraser was Principal). Basnayake Nilame of Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devale and held office from 1924-44 before he retired from office due to reasons of ill health. Was the last of a tradition where Basnyakae Nilame's were appointed for life. His successor, in 1945, was J A Rambukpotha, his maternal first cousin, who was the first elected Basnayake Nilame of the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devale. Thereafter the term of this office was restricted to ten years. Negotiated with the Sri Ramakrishna Mission of India to build the Pilgrims Rest at Kataragama, the only location in Ruhunu Maha Kataragama which provided three wholesome meals and free accomodation to innumerable devotees at all times for forty odd years. 6 Upali Katugaha, adopted son of Sam Elapata Snr (Rate Mahatmaya and Hon Disawa) & Sumedha Rambukpotha Elapata Kumarihamy, educated at St Thomas' College Mt Lavinia and played cricket for the 1st XI. Entered University of Ceylon and graduated with a first class honors degree in Geogrpahy. He was the first among the Kandyan gentry to achieve such a distinction. A great wild life enthusiast during his entire lifetime. Remained a bachelor living in Badulla, Ratnapura and later inb Kandy until he passed away in his brothers home in Kandy.

6 H I E Katugaha alias Dr Indraka, b:1936, commenced education at Uva College, Badulla and continued at St Thomas' College Mt Lavinia. Left school in 1956 and subsequently entered the Ceylon Medical College and passed out in 1963 as the first Katugaha male to be a medical practitioner. Practised in Badulla and subsequently carried on his profession at his private dispensary in Kandy. Great wild life enthusiast like his maternal uncle spends much of his leisure in the National Parks around the country. + Dr Lalitha. Live at their residence at Ampitiya in Kandy.

4 Rambukpotha Katugaha Heen Kumarihamy, Forfeited all rights to her fathers estate since she married in Diga + Katugaha Bandaranayake Herath Mudiyanse Punchi Bandara (3115), b:circa 1867, d:1950, commenced his life in the Public Service as Korale Mahatmaya of Dambawinne Palatha in 1898. Later he was President of Village Tribunals at Kandy in 1913 and was popularly known as "Katugaha Sabahapathi Thuma". By 1900 he was acting Rate Mahatmaya of Yatikinda, the post to which his older brother was appointed later in the year. Sported a very stately figure with and long grey beard and is well remembered in his retirement by his grand-nephews, for those larege square bottles filled with "Pascals" orfange drops, barley sugar and the black and white striped mint flavored "bulls eyes". These sweets with the oven fresh sponge cakes and many varieties of pastries that came their way from Salgado Bakery were relished in plenty.

Chitra was an Associate founder of Mahamaya College, the first Buddhist Girl's School in Kandy. (3060)
