Sri Lanka Kandyan Sinhala Family Genealogy
MADUGALLE - Family #3116
The village or Wasagama of Madugalle is in Gampaha Korale East of Upper Dumbara and is bounded by Gandeke Korale in the North and Kanpala KJorale in the North East, and by Palispattu and Udasiya Pattuwa in the West. The village or Wasagama of Galahitiyawa family which had very early connections to the Madugalle family is in Kewulgama in Gampaha Korale West in Upper Dumbara. The village of Giddawa is in Palispattu, East of Lower Dumbara, and the village of Udispattuwa is in Uda Siya Pattuwa, North of Upper Dumbara. These two villages are situated within the power bases of some prominent office holding Kandyan Gentry, during the early years of the Kandyan Kingdom. Families from all villages mentioned have had connections to the Madugalle family.
According to all available records the complete name of the family including the Wasagama, the Honorifics and the Titular names will read as Madugalle-Karunatilleke Jayasundera Weerasekera Rajapakse Wahala Nayake Nisi Mudiyanse. However, there is a variation in the honorifics found in the family name that is used by the descendants of Madugalle senior, viz, Salu Wadane Nilame. The variation reads - Madugalle - Divakara Wickremasinghe - Rajapakse ..... the origins of which are explainable. Those honorifics have been derived from the Garunama of the Moragaha Madiththa Branch of the Amunugama Family from Patha Dumbara, and have been derived in the maternal lineage of this branch. It should also be noted that on a few occasions and in certain documents the Pata Bandi Nama Weerasekera as Wickremasekera. There are rare occasions when the written order of the honorific interchanges or intermixes. eg; It is sometimes written as Rajakarunatilleke, ie; "Rajapakse" & "Karunatilleke" taken together. These are nothing but pure transcriptional variations of the imaginative type.
Fam;ly and individual names, together with the corresponding Wasagama, Garunama, or Pata Bandi Nama, and the Nila Nama, f those who belong to the Kandyan gentry since the early part of the seventeenth century frequent various recorded sources, which cover the last phases of Sinhale, ending in 1818 AD. Nevertheless, only a very few of these families and individuals possessed the distinction of having their names associated prominently with the most historic of events; events which could not under any circumstances be excluded from the annals of a nation. However, such distinction was never the exclusive right of a fortunae few. Sometimes, history provides equal opportunity even for the most unfortunate among them.
It s events that make history. The normal person, not particularly good, not particularly bad, moderate, the docile or the soluble, will rarely set his or her stamp on history irrespective of the circumstances if they were capable of wither creating events or going with them, their names would not be easily blotted out from historical records. Incapable of being effaced, lost or forgotten, the contributions of these individuals and their kin do go a long way to make history intelligible, to both the historian and the average person. One such individual was Madugalle Uda Gabada Nilame, the initiator of the war of independence from British domination during the years of 1817 and 1818. He was not the kind of person who would await events in order to go with them. Some would do that merely to gain publicity. Being no normal person, he would rather create history. Thus, it would be most appropriate to commence the narration of a family's history with his contribution to the history of this nation.
The King, at that time, had found a man among his chiefs with the necessary qualities to fill the position of Chief Officer in charge of Uda Gabadawa, and this man was, Madugalle-Karunatilleke Jayasundera Weerasekera Rajapakse Wahala Nayake Nisi Mudiyanse, a scion of the Madugalle family of Uda Dumbara. King Sri Wickrama's Madugalle Uda Gabada Nilame; the Chief of His Majesty's private store, was one of those officials that the third British Governor of Ceylon, Lt Col Sir Robert Browrigg, had reappointed to office between Mar 3 & 5 in 1815, at the historic Magul Maduwa, the audience hall in Kandy.
It was during this era that many of the Kandyan Chief's were involved in a struggle to evict the British from Ceylon and while some took favor with the British, supported them and spied for them, others fought against them invoking he Blessings of nthe various Devale's to be rid of the Colonial rulers forever as it was the custom of the people to seek Divine intervention in such situations of oppression and occupation. While the Bhikku's appear to be in the forefront of the attempt to install a Buddhist King back on the throne of Kandy, he first layman of position to be implicated together with these Buddhist Monks was Madugalle-Karunatilleke Jayasundera Weerasekera Rajapakse Wahala Nayake Nisi Mudiyanse, the Uda Gabada Nilame of the late King. The informant in this instance was Millewe (Snr) alias Dunuwila Rajakarunadhara Ekanayake Dharmakeerthi Mudiyanse alias Pinnapaya Disawa, a former Maha Disawa of Matale, who was both the Disawa of Wellassa and Bintenne under the King as well as under the British.
It was the young Mahipala Akrakuruppu Wickramasinha Basnayake Mudiyanse alias Eknaligoda Kodituwakku Mohottala from Sabaragamuwa, who by 1817, was the first person to report to Major Hardy of the British Forces, guarded language, that some Bhikku had sounded him about joining in an attempt to expel the British from the Kandyan Kingdom. This information led to the arrest and dispatch to Colombo of three Bhikkus, viz; Ihagama Ratnapala Unnanse of Harispattuwa, Poddalgoda Unnanse of Dumbara, and Kapuliyadde Unnanse of Hewaheta, all from within the core of the Kandyan country. Though they escaped from detainment at Beminiwatte, a hamlet near Ma Oya, which is a natural bounday between the Maha Disawani of Sabaragamuwa and Satara Korale (the Four Korales), and belonging to the Pilimatalawe family, the last two detainees were recaptured, while Ihagama Unnanse made good with the assistance of the loyal. Many years later it was revealed that the Monk was alive as a layman in the Maha Disawani of Sath Korale. By August the same year, another minor chief of Sabaragamuwa, Mahawelatenne Wickremasinghe Chandrasekera Seneviratne Mudiyanse, Mohottala of Meda Korale of Hela UdaPalatha, was sending to his kin across the border, unsigned messages written on sections of Talipot Palm leaf, commonly known as Talpath, purporting to contain the views of leading personalities of Uva, about the British Administration. These Talpath curiously ended up in the hands of the British. By September 1815, Eknaligoda and Mahawaltenne, the brothers from Sabaragamuwa were visiting Colombo with a memorandum, setting out the family history and a record of their own services to the British, with a request for a perpetual grant of 2 Gabadagam. As reported in the diary of Mr John D'Oyly, on the 15 Jan 1813, Eknaligoda Mohottala had been in the Kings disfavor by January 1813, and his Gabadagama Nivitigala, had been taken from him. Consequently, Brownrigg was describing the Mohottala as "the sole exception amongst so many unreliable Chief's". He was one of the minor Chief's of Sabaragamuwa who was rewarded with two 2 Gabadagam including the Madige, which is the Department by Oxen, of the Four Korale during the years 1815-1818, and on the suppression of the war on independence further rewarded by the British with the office of Disawa of Kuruwita and Atakalan Korales, in 1818. It was certainly a lucrative business to be the new found informant under British rule. All the while, the traditional spy and informant, The Moor, not to be outdone, made sure that they continued to have their share in treachery. Governor Brownrigg was using them in an extensive system of espionage, because the dissatisfaction and unrest among the people of Kande UdaRata was fast growing and the British could not ignore it any longer.
The Maha Naduwa, the highest tribunal in the days of the King, presided over by the British Resident Mr John D'Oyly, in the absence of a living King, and comprising the Adikarams, the elder Molligoda and Kapuwatte Pilimatalawe Nilame; the Disawa's Mampitiya Nilame of Thun Korale, Dullewe Nilame of Walapane and Millewe Nilame of Wellassa, together with the Chief Superintendent of the principal Government Stores Maha Gabada Nilame Kadigamuwe, the Commander of the artillery troops - Halangoda Kodituwakku Lekam, who was also the Basnayake Nilame of the Natha Devalaya in Kandy, the Commander of the archers - Haliela Dunkara Lekam and the Chief of the Military Rolls Department, - Maha Lekam Mampitiya Bandara, meeting on 15 Sep 1816 at the Magul Maduwa, the audience hall in Kandy tried Madugalle Uda Gabada Nilame.
The charges read attempting to induce the Nayaka Unnanse to remove the Dante Dhatu (Sacred Tooth Relic) from Maha Nuwara, and invoking the Deva's (Gods) to rid the country of the British and re-establish a Sinhalese King. The trial was conducted according to Sinhalese procedure. Bhikku evidence based on the principle of Pancha Seela, the five noble truths; the truth of lay evidence sworn at the Dadmunda Devata Bandara Kovila within the Maha Vishnu Davalaya premises and also at the Pattini Devalaya, both situated in close proximity to the Dalada Maligawa, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the Kings Palace at Kandy.
When consulted, the opinion of the Chief's were that the charges were established. Madugalle Ud Gabada Nilame had indeed sent one witness, Polwatte Unanse, and others to the Saman Devalaya at Aluth Nuwara Mahiyangana in Bintenne and to the Maha Kataragama Devalaa of Ruhunu, both belonging to the Maha Disawani of Uva in those times, to make offerings, recite Vas Kavi, verses with malificent sounds and Pali Soloka verse in adoration of the Deva's (deity) which were incribed on Talpath or palm leaves all with the intention of invoking their blessings to rid Sinhale of the British. Interestingly, two years before on Feb 15 1815, the Brahmans of Jaffnapattam had offered Governor Brownrigg assistance of skilled magicians to capture he King of Kandy and secure Sinhale for the British, together with prayers to the Gods at the same Maha Kataragama Devalaya in Ruhunu, to preserve the British and their authority over the Kandyan country. Significantly, Madugalle Nilame's first choice for the reverse process was the Sumana Saman Devalaya of BIntenne, situated very close to his ancestral hoe town of Mahiyangana.
In the opinion f the Chief's of the Maha Naduwa, the highest juidicial tribunal under the Kandyan system, Madugalle Uda Gabada Nilame's acts amounted to disloyalty, which were punishable by confiscation of property and even death, under Kandyan Law, depending on the Kings will. The Kandyan Sinhala custom demanded that the Head of State fix the measure of the punishment in such cases. The Chief's of he Maha Naduwa pointed it out that according to the principles of Kandyan Sinhala Law those who had suffered no injury could not meet out the penalty and that it was the duty of the Resident and the Governor to do so. Hence, pronounced by Brownrigg himself from Colombo, sentence was passed, that Madugalle Uda Gabada Nilame be imprisoned at the Fort of Jaffnapattanam, with the term left indeterminate, as requirfed by the very same Kandyan custom. The Nilame's acts according to the warrant of committment read, "Contrary to his duty and allegiance to the British Government and against the Laws and institutions of the Kandyan Provinces" allegiance to the British Government was the furthest in this Nilame's mind while conformation to the laws and institutions of the Kandyan Provinces would have been natural to this Nilame, had they continued to exist. But in their absence, and due to the non availability of the "living King" this uncompromising son of Sinhale in whom dubiety was no characteristic was ready to lead a nations struggle to regain those consecrated and revered institutions of our land.
The imprisoned Madugalle Uda Gabada Nilame was first sent from Kandy down to Colombo prior to the journey to Jaffna. While the Nilame was in confinement at Colombo, the white rice allocated to him as in the case of all detainees was considered unwholesome by his relatives in Dumbara. On request by his uncle Madugalle Gajanayake Nilame, the Chief of the Department of Royal Elephant Stables, and the Uda Gabada Nilame's brother, Madugalle Kuda Gabada Nilame, the Governor permitted the state prisoner 4 pingoles of brown rice from his own property in Dumbara with a pingo of provisions and a vessel of oil for anointing the head.
As vividly described by Paul E Pieris, in his work "Sinhale and the Patriots", by the 7 of December 1817, the Uda Gabada Nilame was on his way to Jaffna in a palanquin on a journey of 204 miles by land. The route lay via Negombo across Maha Oya to Maravila and to the Fort at Halawatha (Chilaw). From there it was to Uda Pankarai across the blue clay of Mundal Lagoon and passed Madurankuli to Puttalam. From there 22 miles North lay the clay bogs of Pomparippu, which had to be approached via Navatkadu, where King Veera Parakrama Narendra Singha had his Kadu Bandina Mangalaya (a part of Rpoyal inauguration festival). It is recorded that the Mosque there used to proudly display the flag and silver tassles that King Narendra Singha had presented to the Moors on that occasion. Passing these, Madugalle Nilame and his escort of twelve men had to reach Arippu via Marichcha Katty, a total distance of near 13 miles from Colombo. From there they travelled to Mantota and up to the small Dutch Fort at Kalmunai. The land route ending here was three miles across the sea to Columbuturaa and to the Portuguese settlement of Parangitheru, with another 75 miles ending outside the Portuguese Fort of our Lady of Miracles in Jaffnapattam.
During a short period of two years under British Occupation, the religiously edifices within the city of Kandy were found to be in much neglect and in an apparent bid to appease the Chief's Brownrigg announced at an audience on 12 Aug 1817, that Madugalle Uda Gabada Nilame had been released from detention in honor of the Prince Regent's Birthday celebrations in England. While announcing the release the Governor had expressed the hope that, in the future, the Chief's would their allegiance voluntarily to the British Government. Madugalle Uda Gabada Nilame was brought back from Jaffnapattanam via Colombo to Kandy on a palanquin and was permitted to join his wife and children in Dumbara.
The city of Mahiyangana which belonged to the Maha Disawa of Uva, was included in the administrative division of Bintenne during the early years of the Kandyan Kingdom, and it had seen the origins of the Madugalle Paramparawa, the Family Tree. According to ancestral records, the Madugalle family pedigree is from Lambakanna Lamani Kula descent. While later traditions traced the origins of the Lambakanna to the Princes who had come from North India with the sacred Bodhi Tree, the Sinhalese form of this clan name is "Lamani", and it has been used as the equivalent of Palilekhaka - "Scribe". Wherefore, it appears, at the time their forefathers were first mentioned as a clan in the historical record of Lanka, they held influential positions as scribes of the Kings. The Lambakanna Wamsa pedigree and descent of the Madugalle family commences from a Prince named Jana Vasabha Kumaraya and a Princess named Pubbhari Kumari, and the pedigree is known as the Ankura-Sirisamgahabo Parapura on the main line, and Galahitayawa Bodhi Raja Wamsa on the maternal line.
This is the main line of the "Sirisamgahbodhi Parapura" which had produced three Princes, from the Lambakanna Vamsa resident in Mahiyangana to succeed to the throne of Raja Rata in Anuradhapura, between the years 247 and 266 AD. This was during the reign of the first Lambakanna Dynasty of Lanka, which comenced with King Vasabha about the year 65 AD. These three Princes were Sanghahatissa I, Sirisamgahabodhi (S. Dahami Sirisanghabo), and Gothabahya (Meghawanna Abhaya S Golu Aba). The second of these brothers, Sirisamghabodhi was King of Lanka between 251 AD and 153 AD. The prefiguration-"Ankura"-Associated with the Madugalle pedigree means - potential, - and it is in this tradition that King SiriSanghabodhi was considered a potential Buddha or a Bodhisatva under Mahiyana influenced thinking in Lanka. The early descendants of the family used this prefiguration to imply the Lambakanna Clan connections. Thus the Madugalle family has had its roots among the Lambakanna Princes of Mahiyangana from very early times.
The Lamani Kula Lsambakanna descendants of he Madugalle family from Gampaha Korale of Uda Dumbara had married from the BodhiRaja Vamsa of the Galahaitiyawa Abeysinghe Dissanayake Wasala Atapattu Maha Mudiyanse's family in the village of Kevulgama, situated in Gampaha Korale West of Uda Dumbara, and the earliest male descendant from the family is Madugalle Rajapakse Karunatilleke Mudalindu. With his Garu and Patabandi Nama, he was known as, Rajapakse Karunatilleke Jayasundera Ekanayake Mudalindu, alias "Madugalle Haluwadana Nilame", and he was Rate Mahatmaya of Dumbara in 1638. The Patabandi name of "Jayasundera" was bestowed on him by King Rajasinghe II (1635-1687) when this Nilame led a section of the Kings forces on Sunday 28 (Palm Sunday) and Monday 29 March 1638 at the Battle Gannoruwa, and defeated the invading Portuguese Army. This invasion was led by the Portuguese General Diogo de Mello de Castro, the Captain General of the Portuguese in Ceylon during his second term of office from 1636-1638. The rout of the Portuguese was such that the entire Sinhale, inclusive of those who were loyal to the King of Kandy living in Portuguese held areas, arose in arms, and the Portuguese had to withdraw from Menikkadawara and Malwana to the Fort at Colombo and seek military assistance from Goa in India.
Folklore of that era also relates a tale where King Rajasingha II of Kandy, on a visit to Dumbara, solicited a lady of the Galahitiyawa family. Family lore has it that the result of this union between the King and the Galahitiyawe maiden happened to be a son known as Giddawe Bandara, who also married a Galahitiyawe ;lady and lived at Teldeniya. Later the Matale lands of his natural uncle, Prince Vijayapala (The Prince of Matale with his seat of power at Godapola), devolved on Giddawe Bandara when the former fled to the Portuguese to escape the wrath of his half-brother Rajasinghe II. The descendants of Giddawe Bandara living in the Wasagama of Ellapola, Purijjala, Kotabegedera, and Halangoda in Matale, have had continuous connections with their kin in Dumbara since the days of Rajasinghe. Though the specifics of which are not available, the maimn feature of these relationships has been many cross-cousin marriages among the Madugalle, Halngoda, Kotuwegedera and Purijjala families well up to the second half of the XXth Century. The continuance of nthis feature in succeeding generations being come, bearing testimony to these connections, a paddy field named "Madugalle Kumbure" exist in the village of Ellepola, near Pallepatwela in Matale, to date.
King Rajasinghe II of Kandy died at the Palace of Hanguranketa in December 1687. The son of the victorious Madugalle Nilame, who had been honored by the late King in 1638, served the succeeding King Vimaladharmasuriya II (1687-1707). Inheriting his fathers skills at war this Madugalle Nilame, with the assistance of five other Chief's of Dumbara and Hewaheta, led the KIng's forces at Mahiyangana in 1698, to defeat the Dutch invasion of Kande Uda Rata, ordered by the Dutch Governer Gerrit de Heere. This was an invasion after five years of peace between the Dutch Company and the KIng of Kandy. This NIlame was known as Madugalle (Rajapakse) Karunatilleke Jayasundera Mohottarachchi Nilame alias "Ekanayake Mudah" alias Madugalle Meda Mahanuwara Maha Gabada Nilame, of King Vimaladharmasuriya II. He was the Madugalle "Meda Maha Nuwara Adikaram" the Rate Adikaram who was also Dissawe of Dumbara in the year 1699. For his services in war, the King bestowed the honorific "Weerasekera" on him and he was entrusted with the construction of seven Royal Public Stores (Gabadawa) with the assistance of three other local Chiefs. He is also credited with the capture of three Kaffir assassins sent by the Catholic Missionary to assasinate Belivita Saranankara when the Ganninnanses was serving the succeeding King Narendra Singha (1707-1739). This Madugalle Meda Maha Nuwara Adikaram Nilame alias "Dumbara Disawa Rate Adikaram" held office up to his demise circa 1739, which was during the early years of the reign of King Sri Vijaya Rajasinghe, the first Nayake King on the Kandyan Throne. TRhough informatiuon about his wifes background is scarce it is on record that he has had two sons.

5 Madugalle Loku Bandara alias Madugalle Uda Gabada Nilame, aka Madugalle Karunatilleke Jayasundera Weerasekera Rajapakse Wahala Nayake Nisi Mudiyanse - Kuda Gabada Nilame. This is the Madugalle Nilame who led the war of independence in Dumbara during the years 1870-1880. Captured and beheaded by the British on 26 Nov 1818. All land and property that belonged to him and his family were confiscated by the British after his execution. His mother and sister were sent for confinement in Colombo. In 1820 small portions of of his lands were restored to the family, and the little that was returned devolved on Uda Gabada Nilame's children, and they are found at Udispattuwa. + Halangoda Dingiri Menika Kumarihamy, the grand daughter of Halangoda Disawa Mohottala (1768-1780) and the daughter of Uduwawela Halangoda Abeykoon Mudiyanse of Kulugammana Siyapattuwa in Harispattuwa who was the KIngs former Disawa of Nuwara Kalaviya (Nuwara Gam-Hurule) in 1814. She is also referred to as Halangoda Mahatmayo (honorific) and is recorded by A C Lawrie in the Gazetter of the Central Province of Ceylon under the Halangoda family pedigree. She and her four children were put on detention at Kalutara. On release from detention she went to her paternal village in Matale with her children. The male children of this branch of the family had to fall back on whatever property that was available in Ellepola in Matale, derived from the Badabedilla of their grandfather Madugalle - "Ellepola" Gabada Nilame. Hence, due to their temporary residence at the village of Ellepola, after the execution of their father, the children had the prefix "Ellepola" added by the British to differentiate them from the rest of the clan. They had to depend on Dingiri Menika's fathers wealth and property, some of which had been deprived by the King in 1803 before her father was executed at Hanguranketa for going over to the British at Fort McDowell in Hikgolla. The deposed King had restored some of these lands to her. There is also a record that Keppetipola the Disawa of Matale, had cut the crop of lands in Matale belonging to her when the English were on their way to Kandy, in 1803, and the lady has had to litigate as a consequence. Hardpressed to sustain herself and her family, the widow, had to marry Kotuwagedera Lekam, the son of Kotuwagedera Kunam Maduve Lekam from Kohonnasiya Pattuwe in Matale South and lived in Matale thereafter.
6 "Ellepola" Madugalle Karunatilleke Jayasundera Weerasekera Rajapakse Wahala Nayake Nisi Mudiyanse Loku Bandara, was one of the two Vannaku Nilame's of the Maha Aramudale in 1815 under the last King and was popularly known as Madugalle Vannaku Nilame, the Accountant General of the Kings Treasury. The main Treasury known as Maha Aramudala, was administered by two principals styled Vannaku Nilame's, and it held most of the Kings treasures in money. Was entrusted, together with Dodanwela, by Sri Wickrema to pack the Royal Jewels and valuables to be distributed among the trustworthy for safekeeping immediately before the British invasion. He was invited in person by the King to put aside his Regal Ornaments with Talagune Vannaku Nilame, before his Majesty departed to Meda Maha Nuwara, which is in Udasiya Pattuwa of Uda Dumbara. He was the one who awaited the arrival of Sri Wickrema at Udawela (Oudawella) of Gampaha in Dumbara during the invasion. Basnayake Nilame of four Devales, The Kandy Kataragama Devale (1821), The Kandy Pattini Devale to which he was appointed by Governor Edward Barnes on July 21 1831, and of the two Pitisara Devale (peripheral shrines dedicated to two deities) of Wegiriya in Meda Palatha Korale in Udunuwara in 1829, and of Gandolahe Devale in 1831. He was also the Government Assessor of Paddy Lands in Dumbara between 1825 to 1827, and the Padikkara Lekam from 1832-1833. A decree dated 29 May 1833 issued in his favor, by the judicial commissioners court and given under the hand of the Commissioner Henry Wright Esq., in a case vs. one Muhandiram is still available from the collection of the late grandfather of Sunil Madugalle, P B Madugalle. 6 "Ellepola" Madugalle Karunatilleke Jayasundera Weerasekera Rajapakse Wahala Nayake Nisi Mudiyanse Bandara, lived at his grandmothers house known and styled as Peradeniya Walauwa at Udispattu. First Notary Public at Dumbara appointed by Governor Steuart McKenzie on 7 Sep 1840 and among the very first few in the fraternity from Kande Uda Rata in those bygone days. The rarity is more pronounced being the son of the beheaded leader who waged war to expel the British from the Kandyan Kingdom. British diplomacy and Statecraft rarely advocate both complete annihilation and permanent exclusion of all antagonists. Contrary to common belief they encourage and facilitate the toughest adversaries and their associates to think and live British. This approach helps in the dereliction of many a cause that would be anti-British. + Halangoda Poholiyadde Tikiri Kumarihamy, the daughter of Halangoda Vannaku Nilame.
