lourensz was the greatest verdict winning lawyer of his day, he loved a good argument and his wit and humour were the talk of the town.. He was equally at home with the greatest and the poorest and especially interested in the young and their education... He was a member of the colombo municipal council, represented the burghers in the legislatiColomboe council but resigned his seat in 1864 in protest at the actions of the secretary of state and led the unofficial members in a walkout.... Lourensz played cricket, became inColomboolColomboed in almost every public controversy, and enjoyed living.. in 1870 he developed tuberculosis and never recovered... when he died the following year  a vast number followed the remains to kanatte for burial......

At 18, he was already working as an apprentice in the studio of an American photographer at Chatham Street, Colombo, using the ferrotype process (see PHOTOGRAPHY, §1). By 1893 he had established the Hopetown Studio, Slave Island, Colombo, which within a decade was one of the most fashionable and best-equipped in the country. Andree earned several awards at the Exposition Universelle, Paris, in 1900 and at the World's Fair in St Louis, MO, in 1904. In 1901 the government appointed him as one of its official photographers to cover the visit to Ceylon of the Duke and Duchess of York.
