Chapter 13 - The invisible College (1936 to 1938):
Quote
We spent Christmas at sea between Penang and Colombo, Ceylon, where, as the old hymn says, "every prospect pleases," but where we found many persons who were noble instead of "vile." Springfield College has had a number of students from Ceylon. Two of these were of Dutch descent: Montagu F. Modder, Ph.D. (class of 1914), and Clarence E. V. Nathanielsz (class of 1911). Both of these men served in Y.M.C.A. work with the British and Indian troops in World War I. Modder was in Mesopotamia in 1916. After serving on the staff of the Rangoon Y.M.C.A. in 1918, he was called to his home Association in Ceylon as associate general secretary. In 1920 he returned to this country and completed his graduate work at Clark and Michigan Universities. Dr. Modder is now on the faculty of Beloit College. Nathanielsz, who welcomed us to Colombo, has since 1928 been serving as charity commissioner for that city. After completing his war-work service and acting as branch secretary for the Bombay Association, Nathanielsz returned to America for graduate work at the Yale Divinity School, where he was one of the four members of his class to be graduated with highest honors.

A prominent researcher at my alma mater, Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine, has been named “vivisector of the month” and subjected to “vigils” at his home. He is doing very important (to most humans) work on the role of the brain in initiating labor. He has written a very readable book for lay people that I urge you to buy and read in his support.
His name is Peter W. Nathanielsz, and the book’s title is Life Before Birth and A Time to Be Born (Prometheus Press, Ithaca NY, 1992). Judge his humanity from his dedication:
“To my mother who shared my own life before I was born and taught me you should always aim to do your best; and to my father who picked up a brown paper bag containing a physically handicapped baby on the steps of Government House in Colombo, Sri Lanka (at that time named Ceylon), and decided to found the Ceylon Crippled Children’s Association.”

THE CHELSEA-based HRH Princess Katarina of Yugoslavia will be spending less time in Waitrose in the King's Road and more time in Belgrade now that the Prime Minister of Serbia has decreed that the deposed Yugoslav royal family can have their property back.
The Old Palace and the White Palace, which each have around 60 bedrooms and are hung with paintings (including Rembrandts) were confiscated by the communists and used first by Marshal Tito and later Slobodan Milosevic as their working residences.
The family's principal member, Crown Prince Alexander, is already preparing to return to his homeland, but Princess Katarina (a great-great-great granddaughter of Queen Victoria ) and her husband, the flamboyant QC Desmond de Silva, have no plans to leave London permanently.
"I have to stay here because of my work but Katarina will probably go to Belgrade much more now," booms de Silva. "Along with about eight others in the family she has a share in the palaces, which we have been to look around. They have been beautifully maintained and they are still staffed with servants wearing white gloves."
