Ablah, Jabbour

The Ablah family (also spelled AAblah in Arabic), owns the Ablah Hotel Supply Corp. Their business started in 1906, importing fancy materials. Their original store was on East Douglas, with their home behind it. In this store worked the elder Mr Jabbour Ablah, his wife, Haseba, Frank, and Harvey, along with two employees. Later, the business became a variety store. They added several locations until 1920, when the retail stores were sold and efforts were concentrated on wholesale grocery. Wichita Syrup and Preserve Company, a fully owned subsidiary, was added to the 205 N. Water St location. In an effort to concentrate on restaurant and institutional business, a "first" was established in that area by packaging flavored gelatine, preserves, and syrup, in institutional sizes. In the late 1920's efforts were turned away from food toward equipment and smallwares. Another "first" was the total concept of portable steel buildings which brought sales from all over the United States. An offshoot of this venture was a chain of 27 "Little Palaces" and "White Crown" restaurants operated by Mr. Harvey Ablah for many years. With the war making materials scarce, the venture was dropped, and Mr. Valentine, an employee, was allowed to continue building under his name. In 1941, a fire destroyed a 3-story building and all contents, with no insurance. This building was built and used until July 1959. Harvey's interest in retaurants started in the late 20's. It grew until he had 27 cafes in a four state area. These portable steel buildings, manufactured by "Ablah Hotel Supply Co", were thoroughly tested by the large volumes these restaurants did. With the war, came gasoline rationing, which kept Harvey from checking the different locations. A serious illness of Frank Ablah's necessitated Harvey staying in Wichita. They were forced to sell the cafes to local individuals, many of which are still good customers of the Ablah's business.
